This is your antidote against all the negative information you may have heard or read, about your long term prospects of dealing with this disease. This book is written by a woman who had the disease, conquered the disease, and now wishes to pass on as much positive and helpful information, ideas, and support to other women. Some of the questions and issues covered in `Reclaim your Life' include: - Shows you all the things you can do to complement and make more effective whatever treatment you are using - Why natural medicine can succeed in treating endometriosis permanently when modern medicine can only provide temporary respite - All the strategies and ideas to help you manage the pain - Indications, anecdotal stories and research, which will enforce your own confidence of healing - A look at the success of alternative treatment for pain, infertility and treating endometriosis - How to choose which alternative/natural treatment to use - How long it will take to regain your health - What are the main factors to fighting endometriosis? - How to cope with the depression and strategies for fighting back - A look at ways to keep your spiritual health in tact - Discover all the external influences that can be impeding your health and stopping you from getting better - Learn more about estrogen and all the ways it can be mimicked by outside influences like chemicals, toiletries, and even certain foods - Find out about all the practical measures I took to regain my own health - Discover lots of wonderful things about healing and the scientific research which backs it up - Discover about all the different things you can do for yourself to help your body heal With healing thoughts Carolyn Levett

Very informative and detailed. Good purchase. Would recommend this to anyone suffering from this illness. Great recipes and descriptions of foods.

Gift was very appreciated

When I was diagnosed and treated for endometerosis I wanted to learn all I can about the disorder and how to prevent/get rid of this issue. I bought this book and it was lackluster to say the least. It was a long-winded story about a woman who had a lot of life challenges and managed to get past this issue. Nothing of real use was learned from this book and it was not motivational either. I would recommend buying a book published by a real medical doctor and not by a random woman who lucked out when her disorder dissapeared.

This book has helped me to fully understand this disease and I have a better understanding why I have so many different symptoms. This is a book that focusses on natural treatments and it gives advice with many suggestions to help deal with the pain and inflammThis book has helped me to fully understand this disease and I have a better understanding why I have so many different symptoms. This is a book that focusses on natural treatments and it gives advice with many suggestions to help deal with the pain and inflammation caused by endometriosis. There is also a good chapter that introduces the diet for endometriosis and having tested some of the advice in my own diet and can honestly say that I can feel the difference and I have noticed a marked reduction in my pain.I did not realise that using modern chemical based toiletries could cause problems for those of us who suffer from this disease, as they mimic estrogens in the body, and I have started to use alternatives as advised by the author, so that I can do as much as I can to reduce toxins in my body and help improve my health. To give lots of encouragement intertwined through the book there are lots of stores from actual women who have healed or radically improved their health, mostly by using natural treatments and therapies or have combined surgery with natural treatments.I have more confidence in my ability to start dealing with this disease and not feel overwhelmed by all the negative information I have read everywhere else. A great book to offer hope especially as the author has healed from the disease despite being diagnosed with severe endometriosis.

I came across this book when I started looking for a remedy for my endometriosis as it got so bad that at times I could hardly walk. It is a great book and Carolyn also has a website that provides a ton of useful information. I have followed her diet tips since 2009 and it worked within a few weeks. I was not able to follow it 100%, maybe about 85%, but it made a huge difference. Thank you Carolyn for your great advice and for sharing your story!

The author clearly illustrates the 'vitalistic belief premise' of various alternative medical systems, including naturopathy, and vitalism's many synonyms:"reiki is really two Japanese words - rei and ki [...] ki means vital or life force. This 'life force' energy has many other names within different cultures throughout the world e.g. 'chi' in Chinese, 'prana' in Sanscrit, and 'bioplasmic energy' by Russian scientists. All living things on earth have a 'vital force', an unseen energy [...] we all have this vital energy [p.127...] part of the theory of homeopathy, the body is said to be integrated by a 'vital force', which maintains it in a state of homeostasis. If this force is put under strain, illness can result [p.136...] naturopathy. Also known as 'natural medicine' [...] modern naturopaths [...] maintain that many factors such as unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, exercise, or fresh air, any emotional or physical stress, pollution, in the environment, even negative attitudes, allow wast products and toxins to build up in the body and upset self-regulation. This in turn can overload the immune system and weaken the vital force, the body's innate ability to maintain good health [p.141]."Scientifically speaking, there is no such thing as a vital principle; just as naturopathy's 'autotoxicity premise' lacks scientific credibility.-r.c.

I found this book to be quite helpful. Especially if you have been battling endometriosis for a long period of time. This book will help you with questions that don't seem to be answered by your doctors.

This book contains lots of useful info that does bring results. There is hope and everything in here is key to recovery. good luck to all.

Girl in the Arena fooled me - I thought I would see a lot of Gladiator action involving a girl. Alas, it was only once and I get to see it in only in the end. The plot was averagely executed when it could have been ruthless. I still like it though; the premise of a future world adapting the Roman ways is unique. This book is more of a family-oriented story with a slight touch of dystopia. I was excited for the dystopia element! But all I read was family drama. You see why I felt cheated? On the bright side, I like Lyn's relationship with Tommy (she loved him the most among her fathers) and Thad (she loved him whole - with his being `special' and all). I like how Mark and his parents protected and helped Lyn in times of trouble. I like how Uber is considered one of the fiercest Neo-gladiators but usually appeared clumsy and awkward with Lyn. It's strange how I like the supporting characters more than Lyn - I just did not see her doing enough (to take charge of her mother, to defy the GSA). She's smart, though. All the things she did seemed all too late for me.There are instances where I took a sharp intake of breath - moments triggered by man's cruelty. These are the only times I was reminded that I am reading dystopia. Girl in the Arena bored me half the time. I won't say that it's a waste of time; I'd rather say I should have read another dystopia instead.

Girl in the Arena is an interesting story concept taking place in a society where gladiator-style fights to the death are big business, high-stakes sports. The lead-in to the story was kind of tough to get through as it is supposed to be an excerpt from a book on the history of how gladiator fighting began, written by a teenaged girl who has grown up in that lifestyle. That intro comes across as a poorly written book report by any random highschooler and is not indictative of the writing style of the rest of the book. That particular method of introducing the setting was, to me, kind of heavy handed and almost made me put this one down; however, I continued to read on and found the writing style changed to a more tolerable flow. The main character is the teenaged girl and the story deals with her internal conflict at being involved in a lifestyle where human life is not really valued except with regard to fighting skills and what happens when she has to work outside the rules of her society. The story contains violence with descriptions of bloody arena fights as well as references to suicides and deaths. It would probably be considered Young Adult genre due to the main character being a teenaged girl. Was not happy about references to animals being used in ring by organization in charge of gladiators.

This book has a great premises. The idea is amazing, the writing...not so much. i feel like this was more the authors notes on a book not her final copy. Very hard to read with all of the run on sentences, and with no quotation marks .around what anyone is saying it makes it very hard to know when someone is talking or just thinking. Very disappointed that this is what I choose for our book club this month. Most couldn't even finish this it was so badly written

I had high hopes for this book. I chose to read it because it was on several lists of books that are similar to The Hunger Games and because the five-sentence synopsis I had read sounded so great. As it turns out, the synopsis was better than the book. To start, it is very difficult to read. Thoughts are sometimes italicized, but sometimes they aren't. Sentences containing hyphens are usually dialogue, but sometimes they aren't. It's very confusing. In addition, it is written like a rambling diary. Then, of course, there is the token sardonic teenage girl. Oh, for a book free of sardonic teenage girls! I'm willing to put up with them, as with Hoffman's Green Angel, for the sake of an intriguing plot, but the problem is this: Haines has no intriguing plot. In fact, there is very little plot to the story and it all builds up to an epic fight that turns out to be not so epic.I kept reading because I really hate the idea of starting a book and not finishing it; I always feel as if I've wasted my time in so doing. In this case, finishing the book was the bigger waste of time. If you are looking for a good gladiator read or something on the level of The Hunger Games, look elsewhere.

Jonathan writes in a stream-of-consciousness style, mixing almost every gut wrenching story with humor, which he often admits is the best perspective when enduring so many hardships from Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes and Arthritis. He speaks from the heart, offering valuable life lessons for one's own inevitable walk through trials and hardships - find humor in it, and trust that God has a perfectly...perfect...reason for your trial.Buy this book if you: (1) Are struggling physically or emotionally... Jonathan has been there and he made it through..so can you! (2) Want to better understand the 30,000 Americans who battle Cystic Fibrosis (3) Want to build your faith (4) Want to bless and support the CF community

Amazing book. I had the privilege to meet Jonathan and Sallie at Walt Disney World. What an amazing story they both have. Jonathan not only for fighting with something so terrifying but also Sallie for being by this wonderful man throughout his scary journey. It was my pleasure to read your book and even more to have met you both. I hope God keep blessing you every single second of your life. Thank you so much once again for sharing your story with me the other day.God bless you two.

Jon has a great sense of humor. In this book you get to know Jon as a person. This book helps enlighten people to the struggles that those with Cystic Fibrosis face every day. Jon has made recent headlines as the first American patient to use the currently unapproved by the FDA device, called the Hemolung. Here is an interesting YouTube video on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXFNPGefVWQ Get this book. You won't be disappointed, and the proceeds from the sale of the book will help Jon and his wife with their mounting medical costs.

Jon Sacker was a mentor to me in my youth. He came into my life at a time when my youth pastor, a man I looked up to and loved, just walked out. Jon surpassed all my expectations when he accepted that mans responsibility. I cannot express how much that meant to me. Over the years he has continued to influence me with his writing in blogs and now in this book. As a medical professional, I did not personally expect Jon to live through his bout with Cystic Fibrosis. But Jon, as he has countless times before, showed me that God is even greater than any of our expectations. This book is about Jon's life and faith. It captures his personality flawlessly. It will make you laugh, cry, and think hard. Jon has always had a knack for putting important things in perspective. He does it with grace and truth in this book. Read and enjoy.

Wow! I mean AWESOME!!!! Book definitely helped me understand the inside story of CF and Jon's living w/ CF. Even more impressed with Jon's faith journey and ability to communicate his belief in our Almighty God. His story is also such a powerful testimony to prayers. Looking forward to watching as God uses this book and Jon & Sallie to inform people about CF and to encourage CF patients and their families. This book doesn't describe just one miracle but many miracles. What an AWESOME blessing to all who read it!

This is one of those books that should be required reading for schools, for medical personnel, and anyone who has ever had a tie to someone with this terrible disease. It is both heart-rending and yet funny. Jon's determination and faith plays a large part in how he handles his daily life. The Miracle at the ending is faith-building. Brings tears, and happiness. Read it. It is worth it.

Beautiful life and story of the difficulties and triumphs of living with Cystic Fibrosis. I laughed and cried. Such transparency is always refreshing! Great read!

Great book. Great story. Read it in one sitting - couldn't put it down. It is amazing what Jonathan Sacker has lived through. I found his description of the transition from life to death very interesting.

#105,080 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I first read this book in the early 1980s. It was my first big read (+1,000 pages - an impressive paperback to carry around). I recently saw that it was an exceedingly economical Kindle purchase and decided to read it again (over 30 years later). It is still an incredible work. I got more out of it the second time. The best reason to read it is that the author (now deceased) conducted numerous interviews in the 1960s and 1970s with various individuals that interacted with Hitler and around him, sources now also deceased. That detail comes through clearly in the narrative. I wouldn't suggest this as a first introduction to World War II. The various battles, operations, and actions are secondary to what was going on directly in Hitler's inner circle. So for example, you don't get a good overview of the Holocaust and its victims, but you are provided with remarkable detail on how various forces in the German hierarchy enabled it and contrasting opinions from individuals involved in the decision-making or on the sidelines. This doesn't diminish the evil, but it does provide insight on those that knew, those that were active in pursuing it, and those who were opposed, but helped enable it. I was particularly struck by how many of those people thought that England and the United States would approve because of anti-Semitic views voiced in those countries. It is not the complete story, but a vital piece for readers who want to know more.

I have read over 280 books on WWII in trying to understand why Hitler did what he did. I rated Laurence Rees book as the best I have ever read. One of the readers of my review of Rees book "The Nazis" said that Toland was the best and should be number one on a readers list. I decided to read Tolands book to compare to Rees book to decide for myself. I am now about a third through the 1200 page book and I have to agree that Tolands book is the best and most authorative of the Hitler period. It's like being there. I recommend Tolands book wholehardedly. Hard to put down but you need to take it slow to absorb the whole thing. In the book is a list of interviews with people around Hitler who he interviewed. In many cases it required several interviews with the same person to verify info obtained from a third source. It is no wonder that this book got a Pulitzer Prize for this meticulous researcher that was a just reward for five years of detailed research!!!!

A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of the book, “Adolph Hitler: The Definitive Biography, written by John Toland.I purchased this book from Amazon in the Kindle edition. This book was well over a thousand pages and probably would be very intimidating in its bound edition. Reading this book took a bit longer than usual as I had to stop and research via other sources word, phrases and geographical locations. This is one of the limitations of reading a historical or nonfiction book where you cannot easily flip to an index, glossary or map renditions.People asked me why would I read a book about such a monstrous character in history and my response was as simple as “this is history” and it relates to events before and after World War II and it also impacted on me personally when my time in the Army was extended due to the Berlin Wall crisis in 1961.Mr. Toland related the life and rise to power of a very interesting historical person who accumulated power by sheer will power. Hitler was a very average German character in his beginning life. He had, like most families, issues that did influenced his adulthood but the experiences were not unlike many Germanic people of his era. While born an Austrian, his affinity was to the German heritage and the future of Germany as he imagined it at that time. His veterancy of the Great War (World War I) effected his life and future actions in no small way.His early goals were to be an artist but he was denied entrance to the Art University as his talents were not recognized worthy enough (though in any other country or time, he had enough skills or natural abilities to make a fairly good living). While his passions were toward politics, they were negatively impacted by his near do well attitude may have slowed his advancements in this or any vocation.World War I sensitized his dreams of having political influence on his adopted country of Germany and as his adult life progressed he adopted a Bohemian life style and was influenced by some emerging thoughts of government and began socializing with some of these radical thinkers.Once he realized where his skills and abilities were, he progressed at record speeds to positions of political notoriety by sheer will power and his incredible ability to be an orator. His speeches were both hypnotic and motivationally forceful enough to develop a hard core of followers who recognized his leadership abilities. At one point his thoughts and ideas put him in conflict with government and was convicted of social disruptions and sentenced to jail. Because his crimes were political in nature, he was allowed certain privileges denied to common criminals. During this period he wrote his plan for government “Mein Kemp”. Had the people read this before his meteoric rise to power they may have thought twice about promoting his political aspirations. After, he became powerful, he was like a “rock star” and his book became most popular and enhanced his wealth.Through pure force of character and oratory skills he wooed the German people into accepting his vision of Germany and his view of the stringent and punitive reparations imposed on Germany after the Great War.Central to his philosophy of rule was the almost universal blaming of Germany’s suffering to the Jews, not only of Germany but of Europe and even the United States of America. This Anti-Semitism lubricated the operations of government and the social order to negative heights and thoughts. The Jews became the accepted scapegoat for all the woes resulting from the Great War and Hitler’s imagined view of both governmental and economic life in Germany. As Hitler accumulated increasing power that the people gave him, he became a megalomaniac and believed he was destined by divine right to rule Germany and her expanding Reich. Through his belief in the need to increase geographic growth needed for the German people , it became the Genesis for the most horrific conflict in the history of man.Hitler’s manipulation of his own people grew so did his ability to leap diplomatic hurdles and intimidated many countries and because many of these countries were cognizant of the abusive reparations from the Great War, there was this sense of guilt of the treatment of Germany and an almost unconscious acceptance of Germany’s martial spirit and expansion of her boarders. The control of Germany’s military further enhanced his self-importance and his war decisions impacted on Germany’s abilities to make war and ultimately to defend her nationhood. While many dwell on Hitler’s megalomania, it is evident that his far reaching thoughts of political ambitions were to some extent, nationalistic in nature. His pathological views of the Jews would be judged subsequently by both man, history and God.I believe this book is a worthy study of both Germany and the history of World War II; it is also a study of human nature and corruptibility of absolute power.I rated this book with five stars and recommend it highly as a definitive work of both biography and history.

This is a great read. Having read "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by Shirer several times, this book fills a number of gaps of that book. (Not that this is a criticism of that book.) This first half of Adolf Hitler goes into detail more of his personal life as a youth and his "alone" life in Vienna in his late teens and twenties. Extremely well done by the personal interviews of those who knew him. The war years give more personal insight into him than Shirer's book as I expected. A very good read to understand a totalitarian dictator.

This book is as relevant today as when it was written decades ago. It's most fascinating for the way that it illuminates the people around Hitler as utterly unable to deal with a sociopath; despite their worldly experience and great savvy, they just can't seem to believe that Hitler is not sincere - that he can't be reasoned with. Astonishingly, we have not learned this lesson. As a work of journalism, It's finely balanced. It depicts Hitler as a human being with a childhood and friends. It's as close to judgment-free as anything I've ever read, leaving the reader to draw his own conclusions. You could be a Jew or a Nazi and read this with equal satisfaction.

Extremely useful for elementary and middle school math and general education teachers! This book helps me examine my own practice and create a positive math learning environment.

This book is very helpful as a teacher to teach me how to back off and guide students

This book should be required reading for all math teachers working at the elementary level. It is an inspiring reminder that math is so much more than memorizing processes.

Even though this was for a college course, I enjoyed reading this book. It gave me some good ideas on things to do in my math classroom.

This book was done really well. It really explained how to teach children math not just by memorization, but to fully comprehend it.

Great

Book was in nice shape! I received the book way before the estimated arrival date!

This was a book I needed for my class at school. It was the one book I bought but not used.

The Easy Way for Women to Stop Smoking: A Revolutionary Approach Using Allen Carr's Easyway™ Method, by Allen Carr

About the Author

Allen Carr was an accountant and smoked 100 cigarettes a day until he gave up and wrote this bestselling book. He has built a hugely successful network of stop-smoking clinics across the world and is the author of The Only Way to Stop Smoking, How to Stop Your Child Smoking, The Easy Way to Enjoy Flying and The Easyweigh to Lose Weight. In 2004 Allen published his bestselling autobiography Packing It In (Michael Joseph). He was diagnosed with lung cancer in the summer of 2006 and died in November of the same year. It seems likely that the years he spent curing smokers in smoke-filled sessions at his clinics must have contributed to this illness, but Allen Carr remained positive; "Given that I am informed that I have cured at least 10 million smokers on a conservative estimation, it's a price worth paying."

I tried to quit smoking many times. I actually quit for 2 years once. But, stressful times hit and I returned to it. I tried to quit once again. I was miserable. I heard about this book. Skeptically, I read it. No scare tactics. He has you think of stopping smoking as a positive thing versus depriving yourself. Tiny victories. He imagines cravings as a "little monster" inside wanting to be fed. It is a success when you do not listen to it. He explains how the tobacco companies use advertising to hook you. He explains that the entire industry is a con. Smokers, we were conned and now we are hooked. I read the book & see things in a new light.Carr changed how I thought of the whole process of quitting. Marvelous book. This comes from a now non-smoker who smoked for 28 years. Good luck to all!

I never write reviews, but I have been quit smoking for over 5 months and I know I will never go back. I have tried it all. chantex, nicotime patches and gum/candy, going on vacation ect ect. I've literally done it all. I am a 30 year old ER nurse and see first hand what happens to people after long term smoking everyday. I started smoking at 15 years old, my whole family smokes. all my friends smoke. I really liked smoking. But I knew I needed to quit too. I have been trying to quit since age 21. I can finally say I'm successful. Many important people in my life smoke. I can be around it and I don't crave it at all. It's so crazy. all i did was read a book. I had tried everything, crazy. I know I will never smoke again. every other time I quit I always thought about it and couldn't resist it if someone else was smoking. I am so free. So I got this book free as my first book on audible, com and I listened to it to and from work on my phone in my car. So I quit for free basically. How awesome is that. try it you have nothing to lose.

I did not read the Amazon version, I read the other book - the original "Easyway". However I did buy this one, the Kindle version, from Amazon, but after reading the other one in Romanian, my mother tongue, I felt I didn't even need this one as well. This is just my little tribute to Allen Carr...I bought the other one five years ago in Romania, right after I met my husband - he is a non-smoker so he asked me to quit. I carried it with me when I moved to the States. I read about 20 pages and forgot about it: I didn't really want to quit smoking, my wonderful husband loved me in spite of my addiction, so I put the book away, I buried it somewhere in my growing personal library (I'm an avid reader with an M.A. in literature, so I always buy books).Last November-December we decided to start trying for a baby. And I knew I couldn't do that if I continued smoking. I realized for the first time that I needed to quit smoking, that I needed to make a change, but then every time I smoked I felt terribly insecure and unsure about my decision. I must admit, I didn't really want to quit smoking. I thought I will never be able to do it, I want a baby, but I loved smoking so much and I felt I was such a weak person, I was about to read this book just to prove myself that I tried something else and it just didn't work. I even bought myself a huge supply of Njoy electronic cigarettes and I was about to smoke those even though I didn't like them just because I always needed my fix. And almost all the way through the book I had doubts, I kept smoking, and I had the feeling my life still depended on that awful cigarette. That until I got to the last part when he asks you to smoke one more time and describes everything you feel when you smoke. His description was so similar with everything I felt while smoking that cigarette, I realized all of a sudden that I must have been fooling myself my entire smoking life! I didn't like smoking, I was just another addict, and I needed to do something about that. So I went to my laptop and I wrote down the reasons I wanted to quit smoking and Carr's rules when quitting. And all of a sudden everything just made sense to me! I didn't want to smoke anymore! I still had a few pages left to read, I still had my "last cig" to smoke, but I decided I didn't need one, I didn't need any ritual to quit smoking, I gave all my Njoys to my husband and told him to throw them away, I didn't need to continue my addiction, with every minute that passed I was one step away from the cigarettes! It's been a month since that moment. I'm smoke free and I don't have any more cravings. I actually barely had any cravings except for like the first 3 days and then I would just take a deep breath like Carr recommends at some point and the cravings were gone. I started walking and exercising... walking helped me a lot in the first week, but after that week I just realized how much I just loved walking so I continued up to this day. Plus walking helps me feel less hungry. I lost 10 pounds since I quit because I did not use any substitutes, chocolate, or anything of that sort. I know I will never go back to smoking.I recommended the book to all my smoking students, and next week I am going to send my Romanian version back to Romania... my mother wants to quit smoking too now that she heard my story - she has been smoking for almost 30 years. I just know Carr's book CAN and WILL make her quit too. After that the book will probably go to someone else and the chain will continue.Thank you Allen Carr, rest in peace!Update: It's been almost 6 months and I am still nicotine free. I reached my ideal weight after losing 30 pounds in spite of the fact that I quit. I am an entirely new person, so much happier than before! I look younger, slimmer, I spent my winter without shivering near the corner of the office where I work trying to puff my life away, I didn't get any colds. I can't even believe that I used to be a smoker! Again, I recommend this book to everyone, it will set you free!Update 2, 12/28/2014. It's been more than two years since I quit smoking. I have now a wonderful 5 month healthy baby, a beautiful family, and I feel great. Yesterday near the entrance of a store I saw a mother holding her toddler with one hand and holding her cigarette with the other, and I tried to go pass her as fast as I could so that my baby in the stroller would not smell the cigarette smoke. Then I realized that mother could have been me. Thanks to Allen Carr I am not one of those mothers poisoning their bodies and their babies' bodies. So please read this book and stop smoking.

My mom smoked for 30+ years. It honestly took her longer to spin up the courage to crack the cover than it did to read. She quit Sept 30th of '15 and hasn't had a butt since. In less than a month she stopped coughing to the point of vomiting, no more wheezing, and the closets don't reek of ancient smoke anymore. Even better, she now tells people about this book to help them quit.

I used the original version to stop smoking about 6 years ago -no cravings, ever no weight gain, no regrets other than not reading it sooner!!!!YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY - IT DOESN'T PRESSURE YOU INTO ANYTHING . HE EVEN TELLS YOU TO SMOKE WILL YOU READ IT.Advice: Read it fast, like over a weekend then toss you pack in the trash never to return. Life changing !!!

I am writing this bit and adding to all the others because after 42 years and countless attempts at ending my nicotine addiction, it has now been 1 year, 7 months, 3 weeks, 4 days (I used a calculator) and some hours since I put out that final cigarette! Every day since, I am thrilled that I no longer have to smoke.Fun fact: I live in California where everything is expensive, and as of today I've saved $6,064.There have been 12,129 cigarettes that I have NOT smoked.I began smoking quite young, 13 years-old, to fit in with being the perpetual new kid at school. NEVER would I have dreamed that I would be kept in smoking slavery throughout my entire adulthood, that cigarettes would dictate how I lived my life.It was this easy. I read the book. I followed the directions, kept an open mind. I put out my final cigarette and EVERY DAY since then I am reminded how utterly HAPPY I am to be a non-smoker. Allen Carr put the proper mindset in place: we aren't missing anythingwe are freeand joyousand every single day I am.Yippie and RIP Allen Carr

The Leadership Challenge is considered a classic on leadership principles. Kouzes and Posner have spent more than three decades studying the best practices of top leaders. In their book, they explain five practices that all great leaders engage in. Under these five practices, they also discuss ten commitments of exemplary leadership. Below are some of the ideas and quotes that stood out to me.Practice 1 – Model the Way1. The first step to being a great leader is to clarify your values. “You must be able to “clearly articulate deeply held belief” (44).“To find your voice, you have to explore your inner self. You have to discover what you care about most, what defines you, and what makes you who you are” (46). Question: What values guide your current decisions, priorities, and actions? (69).2. The second step is to set an example by aligning actions with shared values.“Credibility is the foundation of leadership” (37). You have to practice what you preach. Do what you say you will do. (39). “Titles are granted, but it’s your behavior that earns you respect” (16). “Leader’s deeds are far more important than their words” (17). “Leading by example is more effective than leading by command” (17). “What you do speaks more loudly than what you say” (76). Use stories to “pass on lessons about shared values” (91).“How you spend your time is the single best indicator of what’s important to you” (96).Question: How are you spending your time?Practice 2 – Inspire a Shared Vision3. The third step is to envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities. Vision begins with “one person’s imagination” (103).“Leaders are dreamers. Leaders are idealists. Leaders are possibility thinkers” (105).“Leaders need to spend considerable time reading, thinking, and talking about the long-term view, not only for their specific organization but also for the environment in which they operate” (110).“Imagination is more important than intelligence” – Albert Einstein (112).It is easier to drive fast when there is no fog on the road. This “analogy illustrates the importance of clarity of vision…You’re better able to go fast when your vision is clear” (123).Question: What do you care about? What drives you? Where do your passions lie? What do you want to accomplish and why? (126). What ideas and visions do you hold in your mind of what can be? (100).4. The fourth step is to enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations.“You can’t command commitment; you have to inspire it. You have to enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations” (18).“No matter how grand the dream of an individual visionary, if others don’t see in it the possibility of realizing their own hopes and desires, they won’t follow voluntarily or wholeheartedly” (117). “The best leaders are great listeners (118). “People commit to causes, not to plans” (121).“People aren’t going to follow someone who’s only mildly enthusiastic about something. Leaders have to be wildly enthusiastic for constituents to give it their all” (129).“Visions are about ideals. They’re about hopes, dreams, and aspirations. They’re about the strong desire to achieve something great. They’re ambitious. They’re expressions of optimism. Can you imagine a leader enlisting other in a cause by saying, “I’d like you to join me in doing the ordinary?” (130). “Feeling special fosters a sense of pride” (134). “Show people how their dreams will be realized” (138).“Visions are images in the mind…They become real as leaders express those images in concrete terms to their constituents” (143).Question: What common ideas are you appealing to? (152).Practice 3 – Challenge the Process5. The fifth step is to search for opportunities by seizing the initiative and looking outward for innovative ways to improve. “Maintaining the status quo simply breeds mediocrity” (156). 100% of the shots you do not take will miss going into the basket (166).“Find ways for people to stretch themselves. Set the bar incrementally higher, but at a level at which people feel they can succeed” (169). “Be on the lookout for new ideas, wherever you are” (181).Question: What are you doing new today in order to become better than yesterday?6. The sixth step is to experiment and take risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from experience.“Nothing new and nothing great is achieved by doing things the way you’ve always done them. You have to test unproven strategies…break out of the norms that box you in…venture beyond the limitations you normally place on yourself” (188). “Big things are done by doing lots of little things” (196). “It is hard to argue with success” (197). “Small wins produce results because they make people feel like winners and make it easier for leaders to get others to want to go along with their requests” (199). “Learning is the master skill” (202).Question: How are you changing, improving, growing, and innovating?Practice 4 – Enable others to Act7. The seventh step is to foster collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships. “The team is larger than any individual on the team” (21). “‘We’ can’t happen without trust” (219).“When you create a climate of trust, you create an environment that allows people to freely contribute and innovate” (222). “Placing trust in others is the safer bet with most people most of the time” (223).“People have to believe that you know what you’re talking about and that you know what you’re doing” (226).“Once you help others succeed, acknowledge their accomplishments, and help them shine, they’ll never forget it” (234).“Demonstrate that you trust them before you ask them to trust you” (239).Question: Who are you willing to trust?8. The eighth step is to strengthen others by increasing self-determination and developing competence.“The paradox of power: you become more powerful when you give your own power away” (244).“Feeling powerful…comes from a deep sense of being in control of your own life” (246).“Individual accountability is a critical element of every collaborative effort” (252).“The more freedom of choice people have, the more personal responsibility they must accept” (253).“If your constituents aren’t growing and learning in their jobs, they’re highly likely to leave and find better ones” (261).Question: Do the people around you feel powerful?Practice 5 – Encourage the Heart 9. The ninth step is to recognize contributions by showing appreciation.“The climb to the top is arduous and steep. People become exhausted, frustrated, and disenchanted, and are often tempted to give up. Genuine acts of caring draw people forward. “recognition is the most powerful currency you have and it costs you nothing.” (23).“Say Thank You” (294).“Spontaneous, unexpected rewards are often more meaningful than expected, formal ones” (292).Question: Do you say “thank you” enough?10. The tenth step is to celebrate values and victories by creating a spirit of community. “Leaders never get extraordinary things accomplished all by themselves” (30). “Celebrate accomplishments in public” (307). “Get personally involved…leadership is a relationship” (315). “Make celebrations part of organizational life” (323). Question: Who are you celebrating? For a great book on Christian leadership, check out: The Secret of Obed-Edom: An Ancient Story with Hidden Truth for Your Spiritual Journey

This book first came to my attention during a leadership course a number of years ago when I was a federal civilian employee. It was required reading and at the time, and perhaps still, there was a personal survey instrument used to help the individual class members understand their strengths and areas for improvement in the five practice areas. The concepts found in the book show leadership in action. It is this practical application that takes this beyond a book of theory and establishes it as a journeyman’s guide to the process of being a leader and helps develop masterful leadership qualities. The second time I came into contact with this book was during a graduate level course on leadership during a Master of Arts program in Management and Leadership at Webster University. The type of leadership style discussed in this book is a perfect example of what was referred to as transformational leadership. Transformational leaders are described as those that are effective at working with people. These five practices fit quite neatly into my personal leadership style and my personality.Highly recommended.

It's an easy read, and they keep it interesting. My only complaint is that the book has way too many examples and stories. It's like a page to introduce a concept and explain it, followed by 10 pages of stories. So there is like 10-20 pages of academic level material in the book. On the plus side, that makes this book a very easy book to write a book report on

I admire the work that Kouzes and Posner have put into their five practices model and if someone asked me which books on leadership they should read, I would include "The Leadership Challenge". Nonetheless, it has some weaknesses in my view.First, I feel it focuses so much on the inspirational side of leadership that it underplays the "sleeves-rolled-up" (getting the task done) reality of leadership in smaller firms. This feels like a big-company orientated book.Second, it doesn't say much about how to develop leadership presence, even though the best leaders seem to have it. To me, great leadership is not just a matter of the right behaviours (which is what this book focuses on), it also depends on your presence. This, I feel, is a gap in the book.Third, it might give some readers the impression that leaders must always be visionaries. It misses the point that a vision isn't always necessary, but a group purpose is. The purpose may be expressed as a vision, but then again it might not. It might instead be more pragmatic and short-term, especially if it's leadership of a rescue team we're talking about, not an international company.Fourth, it says what you have to do (the five practices) to lead, but knowing what to do won't always enable someone to do it - especially if the behaviours aren't natural to them. Many leaders are stuck in old habits because of their psychology, but The Leadership Challenge doesn't address this.Fifth, The Leadership Challenge, I feel, gives the impression that successful leaders have to be inspiring and lead from the front. But surely it is possible to put forth an inspiring idea without always being personally inspiring? Sure, it's helpful to be inspiring and a cheerleader kind of leader, but not everyone is like this. Think of Jim Collins book, "Good to Great," and the level 5 leaders he wrote about. They exuded humility and will, but were often rather low-profile. My point is that there are other ways of leading, but this book could give some people the idea that there's only one way of being a leader. If you want a companion read that addresses these five points, the best I know of at this point is James Scouller's "The Three Levels of Leadership". This too provides a comprehensive, easily understood model of leadership, but it also gets into the leader's psychology and leadership presence, while staying practical and applicable to both large and small firms.
