Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite authors. I love how she develops the characters and their rich emotional lives. That is until this book. There seemed to be such a large focus on intrigue, that emotion and motivation were left behind. I was often left wondering, “why did they do that?” This was especially true with the last reveal about Juliet. If Kate Atkinson’ point was to leave the reader feeling like they might never understand, nor should they trust, anyone, even characters in a book, she succeeded.

Though I heartily enjoyed Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels, it's been downhill in recent years. Transcription had the promise of an interesting WWII theme, a woman narrator, and an offbeat view of "the war at home" and postwar England. While some of this novel was engaging - figuring out the foreshadowing and plot hints - the unflagging chatty asides (like this, you see?) combined with uneven pacing and hard-to-distinguish male characters results in a disappointing effort all around. The final straw was the massive plot download at the end, which makes one wonder if the author, like this reader, simply tired of the whole affair.

After a strong review in The NY Times, perhaps my expectations were too high. The first half of the book is bland, excepting its description of London at the time. The second half seems to me about a wholly different Juliet, even allowing for some maturation, with events and twists coming unexplained and unmotivated, as far as I could discern. Why did Godfrey refuse to acknowledge her anyway? Was there even a hint in the prior 300 pages of the final reveal?

Ok, so I really did love this book. The characters I thought were well-developed, Juliet was intelligent, witty, and daring. The plot was engaging, and I really enjoyed the humor. It was very dry, and it often popped up at just the exact right moment. I knew I was going to finish the book no matter what at only 3% in based off this unexpected and hilarious gem:"The cat, a ginger one--they were the worst type of cat, in Juliet's opinion--had jumped up on the desk and bitten her--quite sharply, so that she couldn't help but give a little yelp of pain. It then proceeded to roll around on the desk before rubbing its face on the microphone and purring so loudly that anyone listening must have thought there was a panther loose in the studio, on that was very pleased with itself for having killed a woman."The humor was honestly delightful. However, with all of that being said, I did struggle to connect with Juliet for quite a few more chapters than I usually like. She was very distant to me. There wasn't anything that really gripped me about her one way or the other, until her far more subtle character finally started shining through... So that made it a bit difficult to engage with the story for a long time. And then as other reviews have mentioned, there are some pacing problems. I really dislike books that are full speed ahead until a certain turning point in the book, not close enough to the end, and then they suddenly swap over to a slower pace. Which was very much the case with this book. There were twists I didn't see coming at all, and I absolutely LOVE that, but I felt I would have enjoyed it slightly more had the pacing issues been worked out.Overall though, I'm very much not sorry I read it. It was another fantastic novel by Ms Atkinson! Not quite my favorite of hers, if you know what I mean, but well worth the purchase!!!

I had looked forward to a good, World War II spy story, but this one disappointed on many levels. The jumping around in time is clunky and does not have smooth transitions thereby disrupting the story. The narrative begins with a slightly affected way of thinking and speaking; fortunately that wanes somewhat as the plot kicks into action. The main character is not developed in a way that shows consistency. She is described as being regarded highly by her work superiors, but if they are flattering her to simply obtain favors from her, they’ve made a grave error. She kept making pretty dumb mistakes; lying at her interview, telling poorly-contrived falsehoods for her cover story at social/spying events, then not coming clean on her mistakes thereby compounding them, etc. I wanted to like her and sympathize with her, but she wasn’t the friendliest person. On a social scale also, her actions don’t seem consistent. She goes out and parties most nights and one logically assumes there is some mingling with the opposite sex. But then she shows clear unsophistication or naivete as she wonders why her supervisor doesn’t make romantic gestures. As a spy, she’s untrained. She doesn’t seem to realize until belatedly, that if she’s going to mingle with bad-intentioned people during wartime, then she and anyone leaving these events will likely be spied upon. And that’s just the beginning of the story. When the action does finally speed up, it is not a slick, spy story. Rather, her character and those she works closest with can best be described as inept.

Like Romeo and Juliet, this brings back memories of Mr. P's freshman English class. It now amazes me howmuch great literature we covered in those months. Like Brothers Karamazov, this drama is often used as anillustration in philosophical discussions. It is among the oldest works to deal with questions such as naturallaw, civil disobedience, conscience, family loyalty, civil authority and the higher law of the gods. My highschool teacher, although liberal in many respects, emphasized that Antigone has nothing to do with feminismas we now know it. It is an anachronism to import such readings into a classic text. Having said that, theremay be some students who have a prejudice against western civilization and the Greek classics. This mayhelp them to get started, because it is a positive portrayal of a female character. Antigone and her sisterIsmene are the daughters of the famous Oedipus. Although Antigone takes place after Oedipus Rex, it wasactually written before the "prequel". King Creon prohibited her brother from being buried. Out of dutyto the higher law of the gods and loyalty to family, she must bury her brother.

Buy the student edition! It is cheaper than the others and I bet it contains nearly all the same content. Easy to understand, thoughtful read, albeit a bit short. It contains some philosophical questions leaving the reader to answer. It moves at a good pace and is clear, there's not a whole lot of hidden messages. Although I purchased this for school, it is a play that I will probably re-read and "get something out of". The only thing is that the picture on the cover on my book is different from the one advertised, so -1 star for that. It's a good read for someone who is newly interested in plays and dramas.

Very useful prefatory comments and probably the English translation truest to the French original. This version maintains the ambiguity that Anouilh seems to have intended. It thus goes far beyond any simple celebration of "resistance," and leaves us with more questions than answers. Excellent book.

There are many ways you could analyze or interpret this book. I really enjoyed it especially since it is so old and we still have some of these same problems today. The use of dialogue is genius and the characters are amazingly well developed in this short play. I personally enjoyed the feminism and how misogyny was not favored by the masses. It was a well written piece and I only wish that we had been able to recover more of Sophocles works.

Easy read, the translation is simple enough to get through this in an hour. Read it for a class but would recommend the story overall.

I am familiar with the and partual to this drama, yet found the translation difficult. It it may be true to the original, but is far from our venecular.

Haha my 11 year old said to her sister, hey sisyour book anti- gone came in!

Kindle Version is awful. It formats everything so weird...and reformats it when you are looking for a specific line. You never know where you're at in the book.

Matt de la Pena has been one of those authors that I have been meaning to read but kept putting him on the back burner. I was reminded of him because of the most recent banned book week and I heard how his books are banned in Arizona. Latin kids shouldn't read books where characters are struggling to identify themselves with their Latin and American roots. Did I just generalize? Yeah maybe... But truly its a damn shame to ban books featuring Latino kids as main characters where actually Latinos might read said books. Anyways, getting off my soap box and back to the book review. Big mistake for putting this book on the back burner. I really enjoyed it. I could identify with the characters and the language that was spoken. As the story went along the characters grew on me and I just kept rooting for them. I really sad that this book ended because I just wanted more. I wanted to know what else happens to them. Overall it was a great book and I plan on reading more from Matt de la Pena.

my favorite book, could relate to the main character.I character has feeling and thoughts we all feel when looking at the future. He has respect for his family and even though they are related he knows theres a boundry that is obvious to them all even if they choose not to aknowleadge it.

A great text for struggling readers, Mexican Whiteboy is a great novel to recommend to younger boys who do not enjoy reading. With a lot of talk of baseball and conflict with his father, our main character Danny is a likeable kid. He leaves his mainly white, upper class neighborhood to spend the summer with his cousin in the town where his dad grew up, which is filled primarily with Mexican Americans. Danny wins the respect of the other boys because he is a really gifted baseball player. After he gets off to a rocky start with Uno, who used to be the best ball player around. Eventually, the two become friends and run hustles on kids from other neighborhoods to make some cash. Both boys deal with absent fathers and Danny deals with his identity crisis of being half-white and half-Mexican, especially when he falls in love with a young girl who only speaks Spanish, something he never learned. My favorite part of this text was the dialogue amongst the kids. De La Pena does a good job of writing teenages who speak like teenagers. I often found myself smiling while reading the kids ribbing on each other. I felt like I became part of their group of friends. Danny also deals with self-harm, which I think is a very important topic to broach with today's youth. I appreciated that Mexican Whiteboy has an example of a male dealing with self-harm, which is a struggle usually associated with girls. This text shows a likable, athletic, boy dealing with trauma and emotions, something that is often ignored or discouraged in young men. And this is a definitely a text aimed at young men. If, like me, you are not particularly interested in baseball (or even sports in general) you can often feel like the novel is dragging a little. However, I would definitely recommend it to boys, especially ones dealing with anxiety or other emotional issues. I think this text could really help a young person feel less alone.

Brand new, and my students will love this book

Written from the heart and knowledge of a 'Homey" and the college of hard knox! I loved it!

This book is not only accurate in its descriptions but also does a great job of conveying the feelings of being stuck in two worlds and fitting in to either one.

I loved this book. I was reading another YA book at the same time with my English classes, but I liked this one enough that I abandoned the first book and finished this one first. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

My 12 year old son enjoyed reading & this was on our school's 7th grade reading list.

Review

“Faderman has a gloriously fanatical commitment to illuminating and commemorating her subjects. . . . Any revolutionary would be lucky to stand in a light so steady, so searching, and so sure.”—Kenji Yoshino, New York Times Book Review, on The Gay Revolution“Faderman’s narrative mixes the personal and the political with great skill; subtly displaying how at a fundamental level, fighting for collective political rights is really just a human yearning for personal happiness, which usually has its roots in compassion.”—JP O’Malley, Irish Sunday Independent“Lillian Faderman has particularly interesting things to say about three themes: Milk’s Jewish background, his populist politics, and his death.”—Alan David, Jewish Chronicle“Thanks to Lillian Faderman we know also know about Harvey the secular Jew, who renounced his faith but remained influenced and inspired by liberal Jewish values.”—Peter Tatchell, Spectator“A multifaceted portrait of a complicated man.”—John McMurtrie, San Francisco Chronicle"Faderman does a fantastic job at reanimating a story that reminds us that people can be truly tolerant—with the exception of the few—and that, with will (not money), anyone can effect change. Harvey Milk as seen through fresh, highly knowledgeable eyes."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review"A stirring account. . . . Faderman succeeds in painting a multifaceted portrait of a complicated man, in less than 300 pages. Milk was a famously exuberant, theatrical figure, but anyone relating his story needn’t be as effusive as he was: Faderman elicits the drama of his life dispassionately, and with understatement."—John McMurtrie, San Francisco Chronicle"This elegantly written and well-researched book recovers the Jewishness that has too often been erased or glossed over in the mythologizing of a gay icon."—Helene Meyers, Tablet“A hopeful, moving, and uplifting read.“—Times of Israel"The theme that comes through most prominently is Milk's unflinching courage and forward thinking resolution. I found myself frequently writing in the margin of my copy: 'So ahead of his time.'"—Peter Marino, Gay and Lesbian Review“This book might be particularly useful for inclusion in the Common Core. . . . While the murders are the dreaded climax of any story about Milk, Faderman has done some interesting examinations of Milk’s legacy, and she speculates about what might have happened had he lived beyond a year into his term.”—Peter Marino, Gay and Lesbian Review"A brilliant rumination on the revolutionary political journey of Harvey Milk."—The Nation Most Valuable Biography, The Nation's Progressive Honor Roll 2018Finalist in the 2018 National Jewish Book Award, biography category  Selected as one of the Top Ten Titles for the 2018 Over the Rainbow Booklist, sponsored by the GLBT Round Table of the American Library Association  Finalist in the 2019 Lammys Awards, Gay Memoir/Biography categoryFinalist for the 2019  Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction, sponsored by the Publishing Triangle“Meticulously researched and beautifully written, Lillian Faderman’s Harvey Milk is a revelation. #382,390 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought the Kindle version of this book, which entitled me to purchase the Audible version at a discount. I find that if I listen to a book and follow along with a print version (paper or electronic) I retain more and finish my “reading” of the book sooner. In this case, however, I abandoned listening to the Audible version fairly early. I felt the narrator tried too hard to pump energy into his reading; this, I felt was at odds with the gentle, measured, thoughtful tone of Faderman’s text.Overall, I think Faderman does an excellent job of painting a portrait of a significant political figure in the gay liberation movement. She does not present Milk as a flawless saint, but as someone caught between two (or more) worlds—pre- and post- Stonewall riots; urban and suburban; passionate participant in the New York Off-Broadway theater world and floundering small businessman in San Francisco’s Castro district; counselor to young gay men who are struggling to “come out” and cautious and dutiful son who never fully came out to his own parents. Overall, Faderman strikes a good balance when exploring Milk’s private and public personae. Her depiction of Milk’s evolving identity as a Jew compliments her analysis of his sexual identity. I found Faderman’s discussion of Milk’s never-ending financial woes especially enlightening (Milk was passionate about justice and civil rights and clearly not into “it” [public service] for the money). The Kindle version contains the notes and photographs from the print edition. Also, the index, though the index seems a bit off (be prepared to do a little scrolling or to use Kindle’s built-in search feature instead).

A wonderful book by one of the very best LGBT his/her-storians. Highly recommend.

Lillian Faderman has written a biography, "Harvey Milk: His Lives and Death", which is part of the "Jewish Lives" series. The book does add a bit more about Milk's Jewish identity than other biographies might contain, but it is a conventionally written biography.Harvey Milk seemed almost like a comet streaking through the night skies. Brilliant, impatient, at odds with others while attracting them, never seeming satisfied with the status quo - all attributes that contributed to his short, turbulent life and his many accomplishments. Born and raised in Woodmere, NY, Harvey knew early in life that he was gay. While he never came out to his parents, he lived a somewhat open gay life in his middle years, and completely open after the age of 40 or so. He and various boyfriends bounced around, living in Texas, New York and other places, before finally settling in San Francisco's Castro district. It was in the Castro that Harvey Milk found his calling. He went into local politics, rallying the gay community behind him. But Milk was not a "gay politician"; he was a "politician who was gay". There's a difference in those two labels and Milk was proud of his leadership in the non-gay community.Milk ran in three elections to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors. The first two races for system-wide and he lost each race. The third race was to a Board that had been broken up into districts. Milk won in his home district and joined the Board. He was assassinated about a year later by rival Dan White, who also killed the mayor, George Mascone.Lillian Faderman's bio is a well-written look at a man who was not a saint. He seemed to have a penchant for picking young men as partners and lovers who needed more love and attention than Harvey could give. He was a lousy businessman - "Castro Camera" never made much money and he was often wanting. But he was a man who inspired others with his speeches and writings and led the men (and women) of the Castro to fight for gay rights. He died and was honored as a great man.Harvey Milk was murdered in 1978. That date is important because the AIDS epidemic began in the early 1980's. I've often wondered if Harvey Milk had not died when he did, would he have - perhaps - become a leader in the fight against the disease. "What would Harvey do?"

When I first heard that there was a new biography of Harvey Milk, I wondered if one was needed. After reading this well written, interesting book, I decided that not only does it add much to what we know about Milk, it also interestingly explains the many personalities and roiling times in which he immersed himself and pursued an almost messianic destiny, while also just being this nice gay Jewish guy from New York. Faderman gets high marks for her many first-hand interviews of the numerous associates of Milk, as well as using all sorts of archival material, including love letters, and archival collections of various actors. She presents Milk's interests and personality on several thematic levels that she examines, his family relationships,, especially that with his belligerent father, and how this played out in his pursuit of love interests; his interests in theater and how this influenced career choices and emergence on the San Francisco political scene; his early recognition of being gay; his prophetic role in the gay (now LGBT) movement. She skillfully explains the numerous personalities on the political scene , and the competing gay and straight individuals and organizations in San Francisco politics, and how they did not fulfill the agenda goals that Milk urged the gay community to aspire for its societal and individual advancement. The complex influences shaping the actions of Dan White and many other figures are well-explained. I particularly liked how she fleshed out Harvey's friendship with Tom O'Horgan, from his early days at La MaMa Theater in Greenwich Village to Broadway super producer of Hair, Jesus Christ SuperStar, and other shows famous and not. Faderman also gave good insights about the tragic People's Temple in San Francisco, including its Indiana origins, and its endorsement and assistance to progressive democratic candidates, including Milk. I liked her clear narrative of the Briggs Initiative, and my introduction to the important figure Sally Gearhart. Each period of Harvey's life is interestingly explained, and the biographical narrative is cohesive. The historic effects of the great nationwide gay migration to San Francisco is detailed with several anecdotes which explained its effect on San Francisco, on California, and on America. The book is relatively brief at 235 pages, but supplemented with numerous pages of notes which I found interesting. I would call this a " must read" for anyone interested in this important period of gay history. Even though I already knew how most of the incidents of Milk's life of which she wrote turned out, she nonetheless created true suspense and anticipation about how each incident developed. The reader is left with well developed portraits of many persons on the scene and in Milk's life.
