5 Stars. It gives you dozens of alternate races to use, both for PC's and NPCs. it also gives a lot of stuff on the 'standard' races for Pathfinder. (( Humans, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halfings, Half orcs, Half Elves. etc)) That give alternate paths you can go with them. Mountain dwarves or forest elves, etc, with different traits and specialties. These details are very nice to have and can really flesh out YOUR Dwarf from all the other dwarves or YOUR Half Orc from others.Naturally the majority of the book is on lesser played but still fun races. Some will be used mostly for bad guys, some for those people who are 'tired of the norm'.The illustrations are beautiful and the book is great. Can't recommend it enough.

This is definitely one of the Pathfinder hardcovers you want to pickup if you play more than once in a while. It gives quite a bit of additional things to pick from when creating a character, all in one spot. You get several added races detailed out to be usable for player character creation, along with several additional options for the races you're familiar with using already.I also really like the race-specific archetypes they give. Since they are still actually class-based archetypes, many of them could easily be applied to other races depending on your GM.It's just a great addition to the PF collection to have laying around to browse through and get ideas for backgrounds/motivations/NPCs, etc.

The first copy I received unfortunately had been assembled wrong, so I had doubles of some pages and was missing others. Thankfully, I returned it and the second copy I was sent was put together correctly.Despite the useful information inside the Advanced Race Guide, it cost the same as the Core Rulebook but has almost less than half as many pages.Overall, I enjoy the art, was excited to read about races I didn't know about before, and I'll definitely be using the book to build my next character.

If you've already bought into Paizo's Pathfinder system, then you already know what to expect from their books: nice artwork, nice designwork, everything we old D&Ders never had in the days of D&D and AD&D. The Advanced Race book reintroduces the core races we're all familiar with, and then gives the options to make them over into something new. The second section brings Aasimars, Orcs, Tieflings and other races, along with options and new bits of equipment, out as options for Player Characters. The last section is something we've all wanted: the rules for creating our own races, using the races presented earlier as examples of how they did it. They also show examples of new PC races, such as a gargoyle. You're looking for new roleplaying challenges this is a good buy, and it is invaluable if you're GM looking to design his own monsters or fashion the inhabitants of a world of your own design in your image.

This is a great book that offers a lot of well-balanced customization of existing races as well as rules for building new ones from scratch. The only criticism I have is that I'd like to see more racial abilities to choose from, and especially more negative traits!

I am extremely new to pen and paper type RPGs. I mostly enjoy just reading the histories and rules to the game. From the little I understand this game is extremely similar (if not the same) to D&D. I love this Race guide because it gives you ssooo much information. Very excellent book

I like some of the alternate races, but meh for the most part. I am trying to build a Final Fantasy Pathfinder setting, so the custom race builder is fun. I've made the Mogs and Viera, etc.I do wish the custom race builder had a table listing, rather than just the in text listing.Other than that, if you want a kitchen sink campaign with ALL THE RACES! this book is for you.

I like the expanded choices in races but was hoping for Centaurs to be one of the race this book featured. I though it was as pazio had a link to it but it only as the most basic info on the class. I did enjoy the catfolk and some of the humans races with elemental ancestry.

My brain is aware of what this book calls sedation, dry mouth, and arrhythmia as side effects from some medications that I associate with people in Minneapolis who thought I was crazy and tried to turn me into a highly medicated individual. Our society functions on high mobility, but those who are not mobile try to avoid phone conversations with anyone who is likely to tell us to call 9-1-1 to be taken to someplace where we will be treated for derangement. The F.D.A. failed to approve a combination drug that fools the brain into thinking anything sweet is unappetizing because symptoms arising from old man fat dread are not always the best way to get our society to only 500,000 first-time heart attacks each year. LaMattina calls himself a senior partner who would have occupational glee if only 500,000 Americans had a first-time heart attack each year because they take enough statins to keep from having 510,000 heart attacks. Millions of Americans would be taking pills to reduce the risk factors associated with the way Americans live, eat, and throw what they are not using right now in the trash. In my lifetime, institutional thinking has assumed that hundreds of millions of Americans can be treated like patients so hundreds of thousands will have extra years of life. I took beta blockers to slow my heartbeat so the heart muscle would not have fatal arrhythmia before I had lived a normal lifespan. I seem young now compared to old people walking around like zombies on pacemakers and former stroke victims. The F.D.A. wants 10,000 users of a new drug to live long enough for five years of test results before we get new forms of brain control that reduce diabetes, cardiovascular events, and the terror of meaningless activities becoming expenses of the last illness that reduce estates.

John LaMattina's lengthy career in the pharmaceutical industry had prepared him for close encounters of many kinds, but nothing could have prepared him for his encounter with Dr. Oz. Perhaps it was ignorance that led him to believe that his appearance on one of Dr. Oz's television segments would be relatively benign, but he had another thing coming. Next time, no doubt, LaMattina will ask questions. A lot of them. Undoubtedly shock set in once he realized that he, along with big pharma, was the target of the day. Monstrous villains, evil money-mongers who were only out for one thing ... themselves and that buck. Right on down the yellow brick road LaMattina went in an effort to explain away the "Four Secrets That Drug Companies Don't Want You to Know."The statements, of course, were inflammatory and LaMattina answered them as best he could. The audience reaction clearly indicated that the questions needed further explanation. This book is a result of those four questions. I had only one problem with this book and that was to keep people from walking off with it before I had finished it. It is not a lengthy tome and in fact it can be read in a day if one is so inclined. It is written with the layman in mind, yet has sufficient references for those who wish to explore the topic further. The risks to the public, who may have decided to discard prescribed medications as a result of the show, were plentiful. LaMattina lamented that "oftentimes diet and exercise are not sufficient to reduce the risk of these diseases [diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, etc.]; and at some point specific medicines may be required to restore a person's health to prevent long-term consequences of the disease." (p. 15)LaMattina decided to discuss many of the issues big pharma faces, particularly in R & D. The first thought that came to mind was that he would be biased wholly toward pharma, but I found the discussion to be extremely informative without being inflammatory. He fully acknowledges the shortcomings of the industry, but also is quick to point our "the value the biopharmacceutical industry adds to improving the world's health." (p.58) Historically, the discussion mainly focuses on the last decade, but has snippets relative to what is going on today. I found his insight to be invaluable, particularly because of his insider view of the pharmaceutical industry as the former president of Pfizer's Global R & D Division.I felt LaMattina sat down and asked himself those difficult questions we all are curious about. I ended up being quite enamored with this book and learned much more than I ever thought I would (or would want to) about the big pharma and R & D. The writing was in what I call a conversational format. The let-me-tell-you-about-what-I-know attitude had me mesmerized. I definitely came away feeling more comfortable with the industry and LaMattina left few stones unturned. It was probably a good thing that he never asked what Dr. Oz's segment was about or we wouldn't have this amazing book."Four Secrets That Drug Companies Don't Want You to Know."1. Drug companies underestimate dangerous side effects.2. Drug companies control much of the information your doctor gets.3. You're often prescribed drugs that you don't need.4. John LaMattina is a thirty-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry and former president of Pfizer's Global R&D Division, an ultimate insider of the pharmaceutical world. While there is much I dislike about the pharmaceutical industry, it is very interesting to read his account. However his critique of traditional remedies is fraught with inaccuracies. For example the use of Ginkgo biloba leaves for cognitive impairment is not a traditional use- the Chinese never significantly used ginkgo leaves and this use was derived from the modern German pharmaceutical industry which is far more open to botanical treatments than the US. While it showed little effect for people of normal cognition as he rightly points out, smaller trials show some advantage for people with Alzheimer's.He points out that cysteine has a weaker effect at stopping smoking than Chantix, which is true. But unlike Chantix it doesn't have the psychopathological effects that I have seen in my own family members who attempted to use it to stop smoking. While he never points out the serious side effects of Chantix, now (but not initially) in the required list of side effects read in television commercials (always listen with your eyes closed to avoid distracting calming pictures) a lower efficacy is better than iatrogenic mental disease. He is also a strong proponent of statins, citing much lower side effects than I see clinically (which makes me suspicious of the statistics cited.) But since statins can cause diabetes, muscle dysfunction and can clog liver CYP450 liver pathways, prescribing them is not the slam dunk he believes.Much more interesting are his suggestions for managing R&D and improving the reputation of the industry by stopping the illegal detailing of drugs to doctors for unapproved uses, pulling all television ads (the side effect list is one reason why), engaging in greater transparency (the drug lawyers will howl), greater commitment to rare diseases and greater publicity of the stories of the science of drug discovery. He also decries mergers and acquisitions of companies researching new drugs- corporate cultures often are different and scientists are laid off to avoid duplication, usually to the detriment of R&D.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Beatriz Williams; I have read all of her books, and the most recent one is always my new favorite. The Summer Wives did not disappoint...it's my new favorite! I think what I enjoy most about the writing is the conversational tone. I almost feel like I'm there and a part of it. This book had everything I enjoy in a book...a little mystery, a little romance, great storytelling, and an ending that kept me on the edge of my seat! No spoilers here, but I had suspected something about Miranda and was so happy I was right!

This is a beautifully written story. I loved the richly drawn characters especially Miranda. She's a newcomer to the Island. It's here that she learns about love and life. The Islanders and the Summer people each follow their own set if rules. I was fascinated by the ridged structure of Society here. Winthrop Island is beautiful but it's secrets are ugly. The murder of Hugh Fisher is a case in point. Joseph Vargo was convicted of the crime but Miranda knew he couldn't kill anyone. I was enthralled by her. She's a fighter. She won't be stopped until she succeeds. Her story is entwined with that of her stepsister, Isobel. They are completely different personalities. Beatriz Williams wrote a wonderful story. I was drawn in and I couldn't put the book down. The ending was sweet and touching. It left me wanting more. The Summer Wives is a must read.

While this may not win an influential literary prize, this book by Beatriz Williams is incredibly entertaining and will likely keep you up reading well past your bedtime. Beautifully written and brilliantly plotted, this is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish the last page. This is the story of two very different women—Bianca and Miranda—told over the summer months of three years: 1930, 1951 and 1969. This may sound overly complex, but it is an ingenious and creative way to tell this page-turning story that is not only narratively compelling, but also emotionally searing. The action takes place on Winthrop Island, an exclusive summer enclave for the very wealthy in the Long Island Sound area. There is a natural conflict—usually quite trifling, but sometimes quite dangerous—between the monied families and the year-round islanders who serve them. The book has it all: love, romance, seduction, secrets galore, murder and lots of suspense.Written like an intelligent and exciting soap opera, it will totally consume you. Yes, dinner will be late tonight!

I've made it to 68% somehow, but I haven't really enjoyed it for a few reasons but the main one being I find the jumping between time periods very confusing, esp when you have different generations of characters from the same locale and families doing similar behavior in the different time periods. I am not going to force myself to read anymore, period.

You can't believe the hype of reviews and you can't trust first impressions(sampling). This just wasn't my kind of book. It had a confusing mess of characters and jumped back and forth in time. I didn't get a feel of the class distinctions and I never grew to care about any of the characters. This book was mostly a formulated love story.

I don't believe reviews, for the most part. Often, the really highly rated ones are written by friends of the sellers! I got this book because I saw it on a recommended list somewhere. When I first picked it up, I was TOTALLY confused for the first few chapters because there were too many characters. I liked the writing style, so I started to take notes on the different dates & who was who. By the time I got about 1/3 of the way into the book, I couldn't put it down. I was guessing about the mysteries in it, and the writing style was really great (I'm a former English teacher). When I finished it, I was quite sad, because I was so entranced with the entire story!!!! Love this book, and passing it to my pals.

I love Beatriz Williams! I've read every book she's written and love them all! This was no different. I love the setting, the time period, the characters, the mystery, etc. I did get a little confused at times on who was who. I went back and re-read parts. In the end it all becomes clear. A list of characters would be helpful to me...I loved the intensity of the Coast Guard scene with Joseph.I look forward to more books from Ms. Willams!! I pre-order them the moment I hear about them!

The story was okay although so transparent. It really made the plot drag especially where a main character learns something shocking to them when it was so apparent from the beginning that that was where the story was headed. The ending just drifted off

Horror, madness, danger, and FUN!The Underdark has long been one of the coolest, spookiest features of D&D and Forgotten realms settings, and this book is no exception. If you are a fan of the denizens of the deep, or just want to throw your players up against these foul creatures, this book provides a lot of fun adventure hooks and color to a campaign. One of my particular favorite aspects of the book, is giving background and history to The World Below by providing a history of its creation by a fallen god and his battle with an ancient primordial for domination of this new world. This does a great deal to explain why this world has been bursting with magic and otherworldly weirdness since it was first described in early editions of D&D.At long last the creation, development, and details of the Underdark have been laid out--and in true 4th edition style PLENTY of fun open-ended ways to make this story your own. The detail that is going into these books and supplements is inspiring, and is not only helpful for creating an adventure or campaign--but just a fun read as well.Get this book, but BEWARE the underdark will eat you alive if you are not ready for it. Tread softly and only bring sufficiently prepared or powerful heroes into this dark world, or they might end up food for He Who Crawls...

I'm a little under read on the Underdark so this book will be useful in learning more. I also bought the Dungeoneer Survival Guide and Menzoberranzan.

for D&D. The races added, the features of each class are pretty well laid out. It's not as good as 3rd edition, in my opinion, but then nothing in 4th edition is, except for the tremendous improvement in battle rules.

Loved it. A great companion to the newly released Menzoberranzan book this year. Perfect even for DMs and players not so much fans of Underdark campaigns. It at least gives great ideas from where you can create new adventures.

Great book

Great source of information on the underdark. Recommend for anyone wanting to take a group to this dangerous place.

I have to say that this is one of the better DM-only fluff books to come out of 4e. It concentrates heavily on the movers and shakers of the Underdark, including kuo-toa, aboleths, beholders, mind flayers and drow. It delves into the monster and societies of the Shadowdark and Feydark and offers enough strong plot hooks to fill several campaigns. The writing is clear and crisp and the new monsters are fun (and the stats can be found on the DDI). I was wondering at first how this book would differ from all the other 3rd edition books on the same subject, but it treads quite a bit of new ground and is just fun to read. Thumbs up.

I'm pretty excited to make my party fight mindflayers and stuff. It does a great job of laying out possible sequences of events without limiting your creativity.
