One of our favorites by Julia Donaldson. This book will make you giggle, but the story is really such a beautiful example of friendship and a wonderful commentary on where our worth comes from. George is feeling spiffy in his new clothes, but doesn’t hesitate to help when his friends and neighbors need it, even if it means hopping down the road with only one shoe. I recommend this book to everyone - young and old, as an important book to keep on your shelf.
I think this is my fave JD/AS book so far (we have the Gruffalo books, Room on the Broom, The Snail and the Whale, and have read The Highway Rat, which is my least favorite- didn't like the ending). This is very sweet, and teaches happy and sad feelings. We have the British version so that my American-born child is talking about trousers... (not sure if the American version uses the same term, but I understand it uses "spiffy" instead of "smart.").Highly recommended.
This is a book about sharing and giving. I bought it for my granddaughter and she really loved the pictures. The story is great. The giant wanted to look his very best so he bought some new clothes. Along the way, he ran into some friends who needed help. He helped them at the expense of his new purchases. The message in this story is one that we should teach our children about the joys of helping others. I loved the story and the illustrations.
Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler are consistently a winning combination in today's flood of children's books, and The Smartest Giant in Town ranks as one of the top - and we own nearly 20 of their books!Living in the city my 4.5 year old twins regularly ask about how to help people we see on the street that may be down on their luck. This whimsical story is one of the few that brings forth the importance of selfless giving to others. Recently my son even asked if I could give a man one of his granola bars I had in my bag, because he wasn't hungry and figured that man needed it more than he did. This warmed my heart, and made both kids happy when I passed the granola bar and a bottle of water to the man. We also refer to this book when we gather clothes and toys for donation. This used to be a struggle, but now they gather things themselves that they know they don't use anymore.
I love this author, and this is another fun book. If I were going to buy again, I think I’d spring for hard cover. It’s such a thin book that paper back feels a bit flimsy. But the story is great!!
Julia Donaldson is one of our favourite writers, and The Spiffiest... is one of her best works. It's a great story, showcasing the gentleness and kindness of a eminently likable giant, but what we enjoyed particularly about this book was the cadence it has. The repetition of the ever lengthening song that the giant sings works wonderfully, reinforcing the action and hence making it easier for toddlers to understand, and also creating a sing song feel (though I havent figured a great tune for it yet). Totally recommended for kids above 3, and I am very happy to read it repeatedly as an adult too.
I seriously love this book. It has a great message and is fun to read. I wish it was a board book. Other than that it is absolutely worth adding to your collection.
One of my 2.5 yo grandchild's favorites. She talks about parts of the story throughout the day. Must've made an impression on her. Also liked The Whale and the Snail quite a bit.
