"Sherlock Holmes On the Screen" -Revised edition is a great book for any Holmes fan's library. This revised edition goes in depth into the silent movies that featured Holmes and Watson. In order to keep things current, there are several pages devoted to the PBS production of "Sherlock " with Benedict Cumberbatch.Despite being called "On the Screen", the writer, Alan Barnes does not ignore the numerous radio shows devoted to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. According to the text, if it wasn't for the Holmes US radio broadcasts in the early 1940s, featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Sherlock & Dr. Watson would have ended their movie career after their 2nd film with 20th Century Fox, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Instead Universal would make 12 more films with Rathbone & Bruce, all with contemporary settings.If you are a fan of Holmes and Watson, read this book !!!

There are no words which seem to adequately describe just how good SHERLOCK HOLMES ON SCREEN: THE COMPLETE FILM AND TV HISTORY by Alan Barnes is: The word "comprehensive," while accurate, just doesn't seem to go far enough.A lifelong Sherlockian I purchased this handsome 288 page hardback updated edition with high hopes and I was not disappointed. Barnes decision to take an A to Z organizational approach may not be everyone's ideal, but he does provide a film and television chronology towards the end of the book to appease those of us who prefer that type of listing.As the title indicates every film and television appearance by the Sherlock Holmes character including a number of which I was previously unaware. Barnes gives more behind the scenes production notes, details of the mysteries and the solutions and in some cases these are quite extensive. For example I found the details behind the Peter Cushing television series of Holmes adventures fascinating and entertaining and his notes on what it took to bring SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE to the screen, entertaining and revealing. Who knew that the movie had been intended to be the start of a franchise - with the script for the second planned movie eventually being filmed as A STUDY IN TERROR with John Neville in the Holmes role.Barnes even includes movies and television episodes with more questionable ties to Sherlock Holmes. He gives high praise to Disney's animated THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE but the Spielberg produced YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES fares less well. In addition there are entries for the two STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION episodes that featured Prof. Moriarty and even THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN gets a mention for its Holmesian references.With listings that include not only alternate titles for the movies, but also surprisingly in depth cast listings, running times and some very rare photo's, this volume is a must-own for any self respecting Sherlock Holmes fan, and anyone with even a mild curiosity about the character.

This is a great reference book for the various film/TV appearances of Sherlock Holmes over the years. Includes full episode listings, cast listings, great photos, plot details, & interesting historys on how certain projects got made. The only thing that might vex some people is that the listings are alphabetical, not chronological.

Being a Sherlock Holmes fanatic induced me into purchasing this for my collection in the hopes of obtaining some new images of Rathbone, Richardson, and other Holmes actors. I also had an interest in learning the up-to-date status of each Holmes film ever produced. In that, this is a wonderful book, filled with pages upon pages of information, cast listing, and comments, as well as some rare images of aforementioned actors.The personal bias of the writer is the only thing that dampens a wonderful experience... namely because I tend to disagree with his assessments of certain Holmes films, particularly those of Basil Rathbone in his later career. I wished there were more images of Ian Richardson and Nicholas Rowe, but all together it's a wonderul purchase to add to any true Sherlockian collection.

My father LOVED this, he loves Sherlock Holmes both book and screen and has seen most of the film versions. Got this for his birthday and he started reading it immediately and told me how much he appreciated it.

Actually bought this as a Christmas present for my father (also a big Sherlock Holmes fan), who was extremely happy with the trivia, stories, and lists of movies in the SH universe.

Great book! Love Sherlock Holmes and this book is a great addition to my collection !

I liked the story. I just have some trouble reading poetry. Luckily this flowed better than I expected it to. There were some moments that I forgot it was written as poetry.The characters were developed to where I began to like some (Blade), dislike some (Chapel), and pity others (Rutherford). I would be interested in seeing what happens next.

I teach freshman English and I own three copies of this fantastic book. There is never a copy in my classroom, however, because all three of my copies are always checked out. Five stars from this teacher, and from the 9th grade students loving this book.

Kwame Alexander is a favorite of mine and my tween readers. The narrative verse novel is an engaging format for all readers, but it is especially inviting for students who are reluctant readers. Do not let the easy on the eyes format fool you, though, this book (like all Alexander's writing) explores deep, important, worthy ideas. Buy this book. Read this book. Gift this book. You'll be glad you did.

LOVED THIS STORY. I love the verse format, the characters and the journeys (literal and personal) that they go through, and I love the connection to music. This is definitely a book that I would tell someone to recommend to someone who "doesn't read." While aimed at young adults, adults will enjoy and connect to this story as well.

Kwame Alexander is my literary hero. I read the book and listened to the audio and both are great but there's music on the audio which is a total bonus. This book is truly amazing and heartfelt and real and raw. One of my favorites ever.

Just like his other books, The Crossover, Booked, and He Said She said, Kwame Alexander has created characters and a narrative that hits it out of the park. Kwame and Mary Rand Here's collaboration is a must read.

About the Author

Bob Flaws, Dipl. Ac. & C.H., was born in 1946 and grew up in Rutherford, NJ. From the age of 14, Bob had three main areas of interest: writing/reading, philosophy, and biology. He attended Newark Academy and then Middlebury College where he earned a B.A. degree. His major in college was American Literature. In 1969, Bob went to India and Nepal to become a Buddhist yogi. He became the student of a family of Nyingmapa lamas headed by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, the Ven. Jetsun Pema Rinpoche, and Sonam Kazi. When the Kazi family moved to New York City, Bob followed them at their request to continue his Buddhist training. Bob continued his Buddhist studies for 18 years, receiving oral transmissions, teachings, and empowerment from a number of Nyingmapa lamas, the last of which was Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. He held various positions within the Nyingma hierarchy, including chopon (master of ceremonies), omdze (cantor), and lopon (teacher), and spent considerable time in solitary retreat. During this time, Bob also studied Tibetan medicine with such Lama doctors as Ven. Trogawa Rinpoche and Chagdud Tulku. Because Bob could not see a clear path in the mid-1970s to becoming a Tibetan doctor, he decided to study its closest kin or cousin, Chinese medicine. President Nixon had reopened the United States' relationship with the People's Republic of China and James Reston had created a groundswell of interest in acupuncture with his articles about that subject in The New York Times. At that time, Bob knew of only one American acupuncture school, the New England School of Acupuncture. Before enrolling in their program, however, he decided to first study massage therapy in preparation for studying acupuncture. Therefore, in 1977, Bob moved to Boulder, CO to attend the Boulder School of Massage Therapy, which he graduated from in 1978. At the same time, he began studying with another New York Nyingmapa who had moved to Colorado, Jerry Gardner. Jerry was a lifelong student and teacher of martial arts. In particular, Bob sought out Jerry's advice about ways of training the qi in his hands. So Bob started practicing various types of qi gong culled from a number of different styles of martial arts taught by Sifu Gardner. These included wing chun, tai ji quan, ba gua, and tai ji chi (tai ji ruler). Because of his previous many years of meditation and yogi practice, Bob quickly made progress in qi gong, and, after graduating from BSMT, opened the first qi gong school in the United States to operate outside of a martial arts context. This was the Blue Poppy Chi Kung Association. It was dedicated to teaching qi gong for health and healing purposes. In 1978, Bob invited Lucjan Shila, to teach for Blue Poppy. Lucjan was yet another New York Nyingmapa who had also studied and taught tai ji quan, xing yi, ba gua, and xi zang mi zong lama pai (Tibetan secret sect lama system, also known as Tibetan White Crane gong fu). Bob continued his qi gong studies with Lucjan, taking various qi gong exercises from the martial arts Lucjan taught. In 1978, Bob became engaged to Honora Lee Wolfe, the founder and director of the Boulder School of Massage Therapy. This engagement effectively put an end to Bob's plans of attending the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston, MA. Therefore, he began studying acupuncture with Eric Tao (Xi-yu) in Denver, CO. Dr. Tao had learned the Tao family style of acupuncture from his uncle in Beijing when he was a teenager. After 1949, Dr. Tao and his family were forced to move to Taiwan due to their Guo Min Tang affiliation. There, Dr. Tao decided to make acupuncture his profession, and during the 1950, 60s, and early 70s became associated with Wu Wei-ping and his circle. Bob studied with Dr. Tao for a year and became certified by Dr. Tao in acupuncture-moxibustion. At the same time, Bob studied acupuncture and Chinese medicine whenever and wherever possible. I have several translations of Patanjali's yoga sutras - I like this better than some others because he actually includes the Sanskrit as well as his translation. None of the others I have do this. I just really like that I can see for myself what is being translated.

Great book to enhance your Mind and Body. I got interested in Meditation again after 15 years gap. I had a miraculous improvement in just 5 weeks where blood pressure and pulse rate all improved by 15 points. I have a marginal high blood pressure for few years. I am still taking medication. The blood pressure clock has been set back by 15 years in just 5 week. The best blood pressure reading I got today was in Cardiologist's office which was 100/70. Last time I saw that kind of blood pressure was 15 years ago. The acid test will be if I can have normal pressure in 6 months with out medication. My meditation / breathing exercises are based on knowledge gained from other sources.The breathing exercises are called Pranayama (Breathing) Exercises. One can find more about it from various sources. The true knowledge dates back to Patanjali - the original text dates back to approximately 2200 years ago. Interpretation of Patanjali Sutras has also been done by Harvard professor. His book contains 900 plus pages.This book should be read a few pages at a time and contemplate. There is high degree of correlation between mind, stress, body and its functions. It must start with your faith in a system like a mustered seed mentioned in Bible. If one wants to calm their mind - then it a step in the right direction. One need to understand attachment to things around us. Having all you can have may be OK - worrying about loosing them is a problem.

This came highly recommended by my yoga teachers as the most accessible entrance to understanding and learning the sutras. I agree - I love it, the energy of it is great, the descriptions and interpretations very meaningful.

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to truly take the practice of yoga seriously. I find it to be fascinating and something that is giving me a foundational core for my practice.

This should be read by anyone looking to practice yoga or gain some serious insight in life. It's one of those books that you end up needing to put down to reflect on what you just read. Very cool.The Swami gave really good down to earth explanations of the sutras which I found to be the defining element that makes this book a winner.

There are many commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali written by various Swamiji and yoga practiceners. I found as many as 112 books in the market published as commentaries on Yoga sutras of Patanjali. Most of them are mere translations. Some books are translations coupled with some asana postures. There are very few books stand out. Swami Satchidananda's book is one of them. Philosophy of Yoga can be dry for a cluttered mind. While his book is also more of a translation, he drives the theme of each verse/ sloka by telling a story, which makes the book interesting to read. While simplifying the explanation, he made sure that he drove the point to the reader.

Very earnest commentaries follow the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali at an honest cost, coherent with the spirit of the teachings. Whether or not some of what is explained is in your experience or whether you choose to believe some of the Creation hypotheses, the simple exercisesthat are explained in a simple and straightforward manner are there for you to try and see for yourself as to their efficacy.

Beautifully translated. Easy to understand. Great explanation of how to use the book...not just a read, but a meditation and thought provoking tool.
