I saw a few pics of pages from this book and grabbed it. Not because I will ever get a tattoo, let alone ever create one. I wanted the designs for tracing for illuminations (on SCA scrolls) and for straight-up coloring. And this book has many lovely designs for both of those purposes. There is a mix of line art and shaded art; the latter cries out to be done with watercolor washes as overlays.The book loses stars for coloring purposes from the ultrathin paper and binding. The paper is almost transparent, with the designs from the other side pretty clearly visible through most of the pages. I'm going to have to scan and print, which means basically disassemble the book, because it's physically small but thick, and the perfect-bound binding does NOT lay flat. I'm wishing there was an electronic version where I could just print the pages I want, but oh well.For tattoo purposes, it's a weird assortment of images. Way too many variations on some themes, while other themes I commonly see in tattoos almost completely absent. Many of the animal designs look like they came straight from Dover coloring books. There are a lot that look like pencil drawings (lovely ones), and then pen-and-ink versions of the same drawing -- but the latter look flawed or awkward, drawn using only a single pen size.I had a decent idea what I was getting, and given that I do coloring and several crafts where these assorted designs could be useful, I'll get my money's worth out of the book. But if you're a specialist artist, artisan, or crafter, you might not.

This is a very mixed bag of a book and unevenly weighted in concepts. Too many of one thing and not enough of others. The animal section is a complete waste of time unless you like ducks and pheasant. Most of the four-legged animals are out of proportion. If you are looking for good representations of bison, big cats, wolves or elk, please look somewhere else. The Celtic section is very good, except, as has been noted above...way too many crosses. I realize that one person cannot anticipate what everyone else needs or wants, but I felt there could have been more of a balance in what was portrayed. I feel I wasted my money, and am still looking for a good book on tattoo line art.

Like the variety of tattoos in this book. I bought it because I do pyrography and thought it would be good for patterns.

If you are looking for a story full of humor and a message of perseverance, hit "Buy It Now". My family has been a fan of Troy's since he visited my son's school last year. REWIND: When I heard Troy Cummings was coming to my son's school, I checked out his "stuff". It didn't take long for me to realize "Dang, this guy is good!" The better children's writers do not write down to their audience, they tell stories that a child will find something in at every level & discover something different each time they read it. We read this for the first time a few nights ago & upon a reread last night, both my sons were pointing out different things. As an adult, Troy's work feels timeless. His artwork reminds me of the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, so clean and full of joy that you can't help but smile as you read it.The message: This book can be read as a simple A-Z story, but, it's even better when you use it to create a dialog with your child/children. We were able to talk about reacting to your environment, never giving up, why we help others and treating everyone with respect and dignity. At the end of the day, it is a wonderful little story.If you get it now, you can brag to all the other parents how you "discovered" it before it won a Caldecott Medal...

Arfy is a dog in need of a place to stay, so he emBARKS on a mission to find a forever home by writing letters to everyone who lives on Butternut Street; asking the question, one house, one fire station, one butcher shop at a time, “Can I be your dog?” He truly is one persistent pooch! Without much persuasion, I bet that Arfy would have you convinced that he’s the dog for you. Each letter will simply make your heart melt.Can I be Your Dog? was a pure joy to read and it made me want to snuggle with my own fur-baby Schnoodle, Susie-Q, who my nephew used to call “Susie Cute.” She was given to us by my aunt and she has been the sweetest little addition to our family. She is often my reading buddy at night before I go to bed. We are her people as much as she is our dog and we love her to pieces. Much like what we have, Arfy just wanted a family that he could call his own and with each letter he writes, the reader likely will be vying for Arfy to send a letter to them, in which case he would have no problem finding a home because every child is going to want to take him in. When I introduce this book to my students this school year, they are sure to fall in love the same way I did. Something tells me that I’m going to need to get my hands on more than one copy for our library.In this book, Troy Cummings is both author and illustrator and as you flip through the pages you will quickly adore Arfy as a playful, cheerful, determined dog. Here are some of the reasons I really enjoyed this book:The cover! – Our students love dogs and will be drawn to Arfy’s adorable face. Also, note that the forever stamp on Arfy’s envelope is a forever home (LOVE this!)The front matter – There is a collection of awesome stamps to start the book of varying color, price, and size.The letters – Arfy is a pretty persuasive writer. His letters are so sweet and filled with hope. I like the different paper that he finds to write on and the various responses he receives. Some nice, some not so nice…but it only takes one yes!The ending – It will melt your heart (no spoilers, so that’s all I’m going to say).The final letter from Arfy – Arfy provides tips on how to help homeless animals, including links to the ASPCA and the Humane Society.I can think of at least two activities to try with students after reading this book:Have students write a response letter to Arfy. Would they have said yes to him and invited him into their home? Why?Have students write their own persuasive letter as Arfy. What might they want to say that would convince someone to be his forever family?Have you read the book? What else will you plan to do with your students? Maybe a service project to help homeless animals?Be sure to check out Troy Cummings’ other books. I would highly recommend his Notebook of Doom series as it has been a HUGE hit at my school. Troy Cummings visited our school and read this book to the students at LVDS. This story is such a fun idea. The dog writes letters to many people in the community asking for a home. Readers will feel great sympathy for the dog, but love him for his persistence. Fabulous illustrations and colors!

Fabulous story about homelessness in relation to strays and about adopting pets that need a home. Great way to introduce a conversation with children about homelessness in general. Also a fabulous tool for demonstrating letter writing, a lost art for many young people. Teachers can use this for social justice, letter writing, persuasive writing and debate as well as innovation! Language is clear, illustrations delightful!

This story really tugs at your heart strings. Some of my students teared-up, but all were on the edge of their seats hoping that Arfy would find a home. A great read aloud to incorporate into a writing friendly letters unit.

A great book for a grandpa with a rescue dog--and grandchildren 3 and almost 5

This book is comprised of several short letters written by a dog trying to find a home to various people in the neighborhood. The letters are cute and clever and he also receives responses back from the people he writes to. Ultimately he finds a home and you'll find yourself tearing up a bit particularly if you are an animal lover! It's a good story to read to your kids and teach them about the issue of homeless pets and the importance of adopting from shelters! The illustrations are bright and fun making it a visually pleasing book even if kids can't quite understand the message yet.

This is a very sweet book. My daughter can get pretty emotional during sad scenes on TV shows so I wasn't sure how she'd do but she really liked this book and I love that there's a portion at the end about adopting animals.

It stimulated an evolutionary leap in perfumery that changed the landscape and inspired hundreds of new perfumers to use their talent and imagination. It resulted in a world of beauty no one thought possible. It was so vivid, stylish, hilarious and technically good, even critics with little interest in perfume considered it one of the best books of the year.Perfumes The Guide 2018 is a different approach that covers all kinds of fragrances, but puts even more emphasis on niche and artisan perfumes. Like the first book, its substantial, extremely easy to read and highly entertaining, .but for many people this book is a great assist to those attempting to understand and define the genuinely worthwhile creations. Perfumery has changed radically. It's mind-blowing. Many of today's fragrances have to be smelled to be believed, and to generate context. The book focuses, not upon what is found at Neiman Marcus, (etc etc), with their corporate, mass consciousness, profit generating agendas, but rather the wave of perfumes that represent craftsmanship and art (as was centuries ago). That sometimes go to great lengths for the ingredients (and sometimes don't) to develop something of beauty. The pioneers, scientists, explorers, who are often more interested in what they can find, and combine, and present.At a time when so many people are simply looking to take your money, Perfumes The Guide 2018 is more relevant than ever. Luxury may have lost its luster, but this book will help you find the good stuff.

I am well familiar with the earlier edition (Perfumes: The A-Z Guide) and frequently reread snippets of it.The rave points: 1) all-new material. No rehashes of fragrances reviewed in the earlier edition. 2) enjoyable prose. I'm still not sure whether I enjoy the rhapsodies or the pans best, because each type of review is worth reading. 3) learning. Dr. Turin's understanding of perfume structure is pretty much beyond me (and I'm not sure I care all that much), but I always learn something from reading his comments. 4) discovering something new to smell. Several of the niche/independent companies mentioned in reviews in this edition were previously unknown to me, and I'm enjoying getting to know their fragrances. 5) entertaining. It's always fun to disagree with a review and snort loudly and disparage the authors' parentage, etc., while impatiently swiping the Kindle page. (Twilly gets 5 stars? PUHLEASE. I get it, this is all new, but there are frequently only a few fragrances reviewed from a prolific line. Samples of some lines mentioned are unobtainable by me in the U.S., even in this age of online orders. And some prominent indie/niche lines aren't reviewed at all. (I suspect, for example, that after Turin made a less-than glowing comment on his now-closed blog, Perfumes I Love, about the "natural" ingredients of Hiram Green fragrances, HG declined to have his scents included.) This kind of hit-or-miss inclusion does readers, particularly ones who'd like to use this guide as a "try this line" advisory, a minor injustice. 2) the balance of reviews written by co-authors seems off. I haven't counted, but a casual reading displays far fewer reviews written by Tania Sanchez than I'd expected, given the makeup of the earlier edition. Frankly, I miss seeing her writing and I feel that maybe the reviews are skewed toward one person's tastes rather than a mix of preferences. Which brings me to my third point. 3) personal preferences heavily influence ratings. Unavoidable, probably. All fragrance reviewers have preferences, and those tend to influence what they choose to review as well as the ratings. Even so, this volume seems far more skewed toward Turin's preferences than the earlier edition, and that in itself was fairly influenced. (For example, some really cutting reviews are reserved for scents that seem to have gotten his hopes up by referencing in their names a raw material he loves, such as iris or gardenia, and then turning out to not feature that material as prominently or as correctly as he'd hoped. I, on the other hand, could not possibly care less whether an Iris-This named perfume actually smells like iris butter or not, since I don't love that material, and I wish he'd quit having those knee-jerk reactions.)Even with the quibbles, I've enjoyed this Kindle ebook very much and will probably order the paper copy when it is released. The writing is still a delight.

Fort & Manles’ Maduro gets 2 stars, which means “not good”, and a one sentence review (have you even really smelled it?), whereas Calvin Klein’s’ One gets 4 stars and over nine sentences in its review (probably because there’s a lot of searchable reviews to pull from online). Olfactory interpretation can be subjective, but this is silly. Many of this books reviews are on scents I can find in a department store, such as, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Kilian, Issey Miyake, Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, Estee Lauder, Michael Kors. Where are the reviews for Clive Christian, D.S. & Durga, Stephane Humbert Lucas 777, Profumum Roma, or Mona Di Orio…This book is less scent review and more dime-store romance novel. If I wanted to read somebody else’s’ non-descript, “bad writing” I would just read the blog posts from Fragnatica, again, free.

If you do a search on Amazon for books about campers, RVs, vintage trailers and the like, the books you'll find really fall into three categories: "Lifestyle" books that have a lot of pictures but little information, "tech" books that have varying amounts of info ranging from really good to simply restating the obvious, and then - the smallest group, by far - books that have excellent information and great pictures and graphics as well, creating a book you'll really use and enjoy. As a vintage trailer owner, I have many, many books of each of these types, so I can say this book is in this final group of rare, standout books that really do a truly great service to camper owners and enthusiasts, regardless of how new or experienced they are. It's a fantastic reference source yet it's also beautifully designed and full of great photos that both instruct and inspire.Why? For starters, this book is thorough, dealing with every major camper type (trailers, truck campers, teardrops, etc.) and it provides complete details on each. There is also specific information on the restoration process, such as how to repair walls, repaint the exterior, fix the windows, redo the floors, put in a solar power system, provide heat and a/c, and much more. These instructions are clear and show evidence that the author has done these things or has researched them very thoroughly. Unlike the "lifestyle" books, which just show pictures of finished products that in many cases have been professionally redone at great expense, this book provides the information you can use to create the camper of your dreams. Yet, there are also so many great pictures to inspire you actually to do that.Second, this book is well written. The descriptions are clear, and the writing is skillful, to-the-point and not verbose. You aren't distracted by errors (I haven't found any), and the information is well organized.Third, the printing and production quality of the book are impressive. There is color on virtually every page, excellent diagrams, charts and plans, and of course the previously-mentioned abundant pictures, all of which are sharp, bright and attractive. I also like how you can see the color-coded edge of each section on the page edges even with the book closed, making it easy to flip to a certain section if desired. Finally, the large-format softcover design of this book is my favorite for a book of this type, as it seems more manual-like, with big pages that work well for pictures and diagrams, yet the cover and pages are on good quality stock, so there is also the high-quality feel, much like a hardcover.If you're into vintage trailers or other campers and are only buying one book, this is the one to get. Where other books seem to leave me a little cold - either providing pictures without details or information without inspiration, this one gets it right.(I purchased this book myself, and I am not in any way affiliated with the author, publisher, or anyone else involved with the selling or production of this book.)

I don't normally write a lot of product reviews , however after finishing this extraordinary book I really don't have a choice. First off, I've read numerous real life accounts of men's time in the military. I have come to expect these stories to be different versions of the same story with perhaps a few personal wrinkles added in. What sets this book apart is the authors courage to let us inside his psyche as he bears his vulnerability, strained allegiences, and own moral character as he leads these men into battle. The units dynamics as laid out in clear, concise, stages for all to see. The author does a truly professional job of letting know how irratating many of the platoons internal and external challenges were without ever losing site of his overall responsibility to lead his men professionally. I was amazed by his ability to not give in to more immediate primal instinct for revenge in lieu of the long term physcological scars his men would had to have endured. Not simply a recounting of military skirmishes but a commentary on who we are .

As a member of Outlaw Platoon, I can not stress enough the importance of this book to our nation's forgotten infantry soldiers. Outlaw Platoon is an honest and compelling account of life and death in the trenches and does true justice to our combat experience.As you read this post, there are thousands of men on battlefields around the world killing and suffering for the preservation of American ideals. As a civilized society and beneficiaries of our nation's might, we must meet their sacrifices with unwavering support. It is not enough for us to adhere a yellow ribbon to our cars, to shake a soldier's hand, or even to send care packages to the front. More than anything, these men need our understanding. I was an infantry medic in Vietnam where I lost my right leg. The courage and fortitude of these men totally amazed me. The book gives me a window into the world of our modern military. I can see many changes and a multitude of differences, but it is all same same. We fight, give our all. Those of us who survive come home continue to fight and spend the rest of our lives surviving.We had a small black mutt, Sam, who walked point with our company. He found many caches of weapons and supplies. He also once triggered an ambush early saving many lives. He was one of two casualties. The other was a platoon leader with a wound to the shoulder. Sent them both back on a medical chopper. Sam was later poisoned.PS hope someone shot mail bitch.

This book is not a book that let's you read about what war is like, this is a book that puts you in the middle of every battle with the bullets flying past you and the explosions rocking the world around you. You are there with the guys that experienced it all. You get to experience the real meaning of courage, the meaning of being your brother`s keeper, the meaning of giving your all and until you have nothing left, then giving even more. Anyone that wants to understand what being part of something greater than yourself needs to read this book. Anyone that wants to know the true meaning of courage needs to read this book. The men of this book are truly the best of the best. They deserve to be honored. Not only for their service, but more importanrly, for showing what it means to be men courage and honor.
