My co-workers tried to help, but they often took for granted many of the basic object-oriented concepts and I found myself writing code based on what other programs looked like, without fully understanding everything I was doing. The author of this book assumes you know NOTHING about programming and starts right at the beginning. This was extremely refreshing. I finally understand the difference between a class and a method. My only complaint was that it needs to be proof read. There were several errors that should have been caught during proof reading.

Well you should check out this book, especially if you are attempting to learn C++, which is not easy to do by yourself. This book will give you everything you need to know in terms of the basics for C++. Everything from writing your first program to debugging it. two words: LOVED IT! I hired a new staff member and he was talking about programming and he blew up my brains with information so at home I scavenged Kindle for programming books (C#) and this book is by far the best one of them. I now can communicate with my "nerd employee" haha in his own language. The major key to me writing this review is that the author presumes that you are an ABSOLUTE NOOB at C# programming. I am not even going to penalize some of the errors because it is worth a solid 5*. Highly recommended, thanks!

I am new to C++ but have done a fair bit of programming in C, Objective C and Java, so I thought i'd take a look at a "crash course" to get me started. This book is really good for that, but it has a lot of errors, which although not really affecting the readability of the instruction - are very frustrating and make me wonder if the book was proof read at all. That aside, i think the book does a good job, I think it would suit beginners who want a starter book before jumping into a large over-whelming text book which they may not understand right off the bat.

With the instructions and many pictures I found it easy to learn from. Also all the extras are a great value. I reccomend this book for anyone needing a quick crash course in C programming and all other for the extras inside. Thumbs up.Cheers

This book is a detailed study of public relations! It's intended to be a textbook, but as a professional writer and marketer who does PR, I know this will be my go-to resource for the next time I put strategy together. The model of PESO media channels is fantastic for marketing campaigns and social media. PESO: Paid, earned, shared, owned. The book goes into detail on where these four areas overlap and gives examples from company strategies. Knowing what parts we can control and which we can't is also important in looking at each of the channels.The biggest benefit is that this book gives the why behind a lot of what PR experts do. This means it helps practitioners hone in on the most effective strategies and campaigns. I have seen far too many experts who go through the motions, but have no idea how what they are doing is helping their clients.I will definitely be reading through with a highlighter and marking my favorite pages for future reference. There are callout boxes throughout with pro tips that give strategy help and examples from PR campaigns. I appreciated the case studies and practical examples. The "Think Critically" section at the end of the chapters is an opportunity for discussion within a group setting. The Key Terms at the end of the chapter also provides a list with page numbers of where those terms were used in the chapter. This is in addition to a thorough glossary at the end of the book.The book follows an easy to understand format and breaks content into Research/Diagnosis, Objectives, Strategy, Tactics, Implementation and Reporting/Evaluation (ROSTIR). I do think that the content might be overwhelming for a small business owner who hasn't tackled marketing on their own. It's a lot to take in. But for the marketing or communications expert, this book kicks it up a notch. It's either a mini-course that provides an alternative to a class, or it could be a refreshers for someone who has been in the field for a while.The drawback is that the book is pricey - It's priced as textbooks are priced.

There's also a lot of bibliographical references within the book and it's well-researched. The text itself is scholarly, but still intriguing for those simply interested in the topic. I found this to be an informative book.

But a thorough , common sense usable tome.

Good reference for DIY public relations in an easy to read, informative textbook format. I really like this book as a reference for my small business. Though it is thoroughly readable, the format lends itself well as a reference text for ideas and concepts. PR is the best "secret weapon" we have and can be far more effective than traditional advertising at a fraction of the cost. Recommended.,

I have the highest respect for Jaeger as a scholar, having studied many of his books (and met him at Harvard). This one was perfect for a research project I did on the development in classical times of the concept of the Psyche or soul. He is a superb writer and thinker, with very comprehensive understanding of classical philosophy and learning.

One way two areas of thought can meet is by asking the same question. A question that is asked both by Greek religious writers like Hesiod and by Greek philosophical writers like Anaximander is "Where do things come from?". To describe how things work is the pursuit of natural philosophy, and this topic is sometimes also visited by religious writers when they speak about the behavior of personifications of processes of the world, like the Moirai. Jaeger writes about theogonies (where the gods came from), "Even in its oldest Hesiodic form, theogony is a typical transition-product, not unconnected with the new philosophical spirit, an offshoot of a religious attitude which has already become more thoughtful".It is a commonplace that Thales asserts that everything is made of water, or that the "physis" or everything is water. Jaeger explains that physis denotes the "process of growth and emergence", and "it also includes their source of origin - that from which they have grown, and from which their growth is constantly renewed - in other words, the reality underlying the things of our experience." Writing about Thales' statement that "everything is full of gods", Jaeger suggests the following interpretation: "everything is full of mysterious living forces; the distinction between animate and inanimate nature has no foundation in fact; everything has a soul."We find statements discussed in this book by lesser known writers and by writers not famous as philosophers. For example, a fragment of the comedian Epicharmus asks how it can be that (according to Hesiod) Chaos was the ultimate beginning and yet itself came into being. Jaeger says, "Clearly the playwright had had some acquaintance with the natural philosophers' conception of a first principle which itself has had no beginning."Jaeger tells us that Parmenides' thought was not only logical. He says about Parmenides that "His mysterious vision in the realm of light is a genuine religious experience: when the weak human eye turns towards the hidden truth, life itself becomes transfigured."Jaeger states that the first time the idea of "law" (nomos) appears in philosophical writings is in a fragment of Heraclitus, which talks about "divine law". Jaeger glosses, "the term is not used in the simple political sense but has been extended to cover the very nature of reality itself", and a page later writes, "A 'law of nature' is merely a general descriptive formula for referring to some specific complex of observed facts, while Heraclitus' divine law is something genuinely normative. It is the highest norm of the cosmic process, and the thing which gives that process its significance and worth."

While modern authors tend to focus on the Orphic cults of the Greeks in order to explain their attachment to theology, Jaeger (nearly 50 years dead) does an excellent job of tracing the lineage of Greek theology, the "approach of God through Logos," as the father of their later philosophical systems. He examines this early period of speculative philosophy and reductive reasoning with absolute ease, illuminating complex (and often historiographical) arguments with plain and concise language.The book, a collection of lectures given a narrative form by the author, is just about the best study on the subject history has yet to offer. It makes a good companion to his seminal three volume series on Greek paideia as well as to his later work, "Early Christianity and Greek Paideia," which was also derived from his Gifford Lectures.A quick note to casual students, however: the book was written in the 1940's, when classical scholars presupposed a knowledge of Greek amongst their readers. As a result, the work is peppered with ancient Greek. If you're not familiar with the Greek alphabet, you may want to have a Greek-English dictionary handy. Those with even a casual knowledge of Greek phonetics should do just fine.
