This is THE ONLY translation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that you should read!This book is amazing and actually rights the translation wrongs done to Verne by early translators! In English, 20K is relegated to "Juvenile Fiction" while in France and the rest of the World, this book is still a best selling ADULT Science Fiction (or Scientific Novel as Verne called his work).This book and its annotations explain some of the subtle and genius details that Verne included but were mistranslated and misattributed as mistakes made not by the translator, but by poor Jules. For example... the Professor is said to have spent time in America's "Disagreeable Territory" which has been mis-interpreted as a vague non-specific location and evidence of Verne's supposed anti-American sentiment. However the location should have been translated as "Badlands of South Dakota", which would have reflected the Professor's (and Verne's) cutting edge knowledge of aquatic fossils. Another pathetic translation was when Ned Land is said to use a Lentil (a legume! a bean!?) to make fire! That makes no sense does it? Of course not - until the word is correctly translated as a "lens" - then it makes perfect sense that Ned Land would use a lens, to focus the sun's rays to make fire!Verne was a genius and he has suffered over 150 years of libelous misrepresentation due to lazy and criminally ignorant translation. Verne isn't the only victim to suffer - generations of English speaking Science Fiction fans and scientists have been denied access to the genius that is Verne. This translation is the first step in righting a wrong, the second step is you reading the book as it was mean to be read.Trust me, you'll thank me for the recommendation!The only thing that could make this book any better would be if the Nautilus submarine in the illustrations was the submarine designed by Harper Goff!

What a great book. Having used the 7th edition often, this was a pleasant update to the old edition with updated photos, easier navigation of pages, and overall just a fantastic resource that Im sure everyone involved with neurosurgery for years has been using. The book in my opinion just feels cleaner with a better layout and color coding scheme that helps once you have used it a few times to quickly navigate an otherwise complex load of information. Cant really speak to how great the book is as I am still new to the field, but has proven itself time and time again for me in the short time owning it to be a great companion for rounds, pimp questions, quickly refreshing prior to cases etc... In my opinion the 8th edition is worth every penny for the upgrade from the 7th, however I really wish that a PDF, eBook, or some other quick referencing computer source came with it as it would be amazing to navigate 1000+ pages using control+F (find) for one specific bit of information without having to waste time finding what I need in the index then to be referenced to a different section etc....

I'm reviewing the quality of print, not the book itself. It's absolutely terrible quality. The caption is misleading - this is a flimsy softcover book.The pictures look like they are clip art printed off of my ancient laser printer, complete with graininess, lines, and low saturation. The book is either formatted or trimmed wrong, with all of the text and pictures almost touching the top edge and a huge margin at the bottom. The cover looks like clip art that's been re-formatted. There's no publisher information, besides "Made in the USA, San Bernardino, CA / 28 November 2017" (which is the day after I ordered it, so it was obviously printed on demand.) I have made 6 of the recipes in this book so far, and they have all been excellent. I really like Diana Henry's cookbooks, but they're a bit of a pain to deal with on a weeknight. This one is PERFECT. In particular, we've really liked the sausage recipes so far because they're so easy to make and fast. This is one of the cookbooks that's on my regular rotation.My favorites so far are:Carrot hummus, roast tomatoes, and harissa yogurt toastCumin-roast eggplants, chickpeas, walnuts and datesbaked sausages with apples, raisins, and hard ciderMoroccan-spiced chicken with dates and eggplant

I have scanned some of these reviews and comments and wanted to note that the title Simple is referring to the simplicity of the instructions. Diana Henrys recipes are by and large written for people with well stocked pantries and with excellent access to high quality produce and meat.Reading through the recipes I am struck by how short and yes, simple, the instructions are. A good majority of these recipes are one pot meals. Maybe some searing first before adding the rest of the ingredients into the same pot and popping it into the oven, but in my opinion these recipes ARE incredibly simple recipes packed with flavor from the use of wonderful ingredients.Sure, you might need to stock preserved lemons, harissa paste, white balsamic, anchovies, marsala, vermouth, apple brandy, sherry vinegar, 'nduja, pomegranate molasses, miso paste, sambal oelek for a few of the recipes, but, at the risk of inciting wrath, in order to cook from the majority of the most current recipe books, these are things that are essential to a well stocked pantry anyway. All of these items can be purchased online if they are not in your local store. If this is not for you, then maybe this book might not be a wise purchase unless you dont mind skipping those recipes. If you already own, or are interested in purchasing these ingredients and want a book which explores simple ways of using these ingredients brilliantly, then look no further, buy this book!I went hunting through the book for produce that might be difficult for some people to find, and there were only about 5-6 recipes which I thought might require substitution if you can't access the following: ie. watercress, ogen melon, purple basil, cavolo nero, daikon, fresh rose petals. However, all the other recipes in the book had what I would consider to be common produce that I expect would be readily available pretty much anywhere.A couple of recipes had protein that might not be easily available, notably, 'ndjua (I have purchased this online easily when I couldn't find it locally) Keta roe, smoked fish (quite possibly easy to find where you live, not so easy for me) and squab, but that's about it.In short, if you like very flavorful food cooked simply, using a well stocked pantry, then this book is for you. I have been thrilled with every dish of Diana Henrys that I have made so far, and I have recently purchased ALL of her books based on the excellence of the handful of recipes I have thus far tried.Last night I made peperoni gratinati al forno from Simple, using a plethora of multicolored peppers from our tiny garden. It was delicious and yes, was quick and simple! We had it with her Porc Au Four (which was wonderful) from her book Plenty.Tonight I am making her Roast Squash with Ricotta, Smoked Cheese and Sage,from Simple, to go with the leftover Porc Au Four. I just purchased some lovely asparagus so, in the next day or so, I plan to make her Fettuccini with Asparagus and Peas and Saffron from Simple. In the next week I also plan to make her Normandy Lamb (with dry cider and apple brandy) and White Beans with Garlic and Parsley from Cook Simple and also her Chicken with Tarragon and Dijon from A Bird in the Hand.Obviously I am cooking obsessively right now from Diana Henrys books. I honestly haven't found another chef whose recipes are this delicious, this simple, this focused on great produce and perfectly married flavors for, well, forever! And I have hundreds, and hundreds of recipe books from all the greats, which I use for almost every meal.While I am at it, if you haven't made Henry's Chicken with Lavender Honey and Peaches from her book A Bird in the Hand then you simply must! You can thank me later :)

The cooking techniques in the book are indeed not difficult, per the title. The ingredients may be more accessible in the author's home town, but in mine, they're expensive and hard to find. Some would have to be Internet orders. I've been cooking fairly seriously for over fifty years, but a few of the ingredients in this cookbook are things I've never heard of.This is not everyday food--it's excellent food for guests, prepared without a great deal of trouble. But if you're looking for recipes to make for ordinary dinners, this probably isn't the cookbook for you.

Depending on your cooking skills, experience, and pantry contents, you might find the title of this cookbook misleading. Note that Amazon carries many of the unusual ingredients required (e.g. Sumac, pomegranate molasses). I have also found that skipped ingredients and substitutions don't detract from the meal. Some very tasty and creative recipes.

A must buy for creative but simple dinners. I have made two recipes so far and they were both amazing. You will want this book and you will want to eat this food.

If you're looking for easy recipes with good ingredients, and you like putting a little time into planning your meals, this is a fantastic cookbook. I have had the book for a week or so, and i have planned my menus around the recipes in this book. All of the recipes I have tried have been delicious and yes, they were simple and effortless. The flavors are unique. The dishes plate beautifully.If you're expecting pantry staples cookbook, however, this may not be it, depending on what is in your pantry. As I mentioned a couple times, the recipes do require a bit of care and planning. Ms. Henry does a great job discussing resources as well as substitutions. I haven't had any issues finding ingredients around my town.This cookbook is for those who like to enjoy the challenge and process of cooking, but appreciate the beauty of simplicity as well. It was exactly what I hoped it would be.I did find that a couple of recipes are missing measurements in the Kindle edition. For instance it will say "1 heavy cream". Hopefully someone can edit this soon!

Great easy to follow cookbook with different recipes. Like the convenience of kindle cookbooks. Just pull up the recipe on your tablet at your kitchen workplace.

I liked the simplicity. I bought it for myself to change up my day to day meals which had become so repetitive I was asking "what can I fix different and still be good".

I love the BR series and this one is no exception. I'd been waiting for them to come out on Kindle since I got my device and I'm happy to say there are several of them available now.This series is great for those of us who love trivia, background stories, and other stuff no one really needs to know but find it interesting to read about all the same. These books are great to read anytime but are especially great for places like airports or doctor's offices where you want something that is interesting enough to hold your attention but that doesn't require a whole lot of concentration. A huge plus to having them in Kindle form now is that you don't have to haul those big, heavy books with you.This and the others in the series are great books whether you only have a few minutes to read or if you've got a large chunk of time. The longest articles are only a few pages long so if you hit a topic you really don't care about, it's easy to just go to the next one. I'd advise you to give even those articles a try anyway; I've found myself enjoying the articles about things I really don't generally have much interest in.The only real drawback to this and the others in the series on Kindle is that they still haven't really found a satisfactory way to handle the quizes. They have made some improvement in this book and now have a link where you can jump back to the answers. That would keep you from inadvertently reading the answer before you're ready and with a Kindle, it would be easy to flip the device to read the answer when you're ready.Outside of that, this is a wonderful series that I'd recommend even more highly on Kindle than in its regular book form.

I bought this as a Pollyanna gift and ended up with it at the end. As some who usually has a mobile device in my hand while "doing business" I liked the idea of separating myself from the realities of the world and taking a break at least during "potty time" at home.I am only 100 pages in as I only read it during "business" hours (or minutes), but so far the book is very entertaining. There are fun facts, odd bits of history, entertainment and news, various stories about how familiar businesses were started or funny typos from different publishing for example. Many of the stories are from the past couple of years so a lot of the information is still relevant.If you are someone like me who likes fun facts and are somewhat of a "Cliff Clavin" type from cheers, I think you will enjoy this book. My only caution is not to get too hung-up on the stories or you might end up with severe pins-and-needles in your legs from sitting on the "throne" a little too long!

I can say that Uncle John's annual editions are always a funny, relevant, informative read. They set the standard. These folks have done a lot of things right. The humor and personality of the books makes for an easy read and not a dry textbook. I did notice that they repeated one article this time, however. And when I say that that shows how good I think they are. They've established such consistently good annual editions with tons of pages in them. I gotta imagine it gets harder to dig and find trivia as you go on after so many years but if anybody can it's them.

I own several Uncle John's Bathroom Readers. The stories are short but very interesting. There are over 600 pages in this particular book, so it will occupy for awhile. I like to just flip through until I find something interesting. The little trivial facts at the bottom of each page are also interesting to read. This is book is something you can read briefly while you need to, and then pick up where you left off next time.

Great Book for the jail-bird in your life...no kidding..short stories and reading to help excite the mind and get away from depressive thinking.

A fun book of facts, in a nice, readable format. My only suggestion to the publisher is to have spiral wire binding for ease of use turning pages. Also, maybe have a bibliography section that lists where the source(s) of information are from? Otherwise, a good read to have in the bathroom, bedroom or on the desk at work to read during a lunch break.

This book has lots of fun information but I had to give it to my son because the print is so small I would have to use a magnifying glass to read it. But then I'm in my 70s and the old peepers are not what they were.

I've missed out on a few of the other bathroom readers, but this volume appears to have gathered new stories within the last three years, so I don't see any "repeats." I enjoy the snippets of facts after each story, and the short, long, and sit-and-get-comfy-on-the-throne variety is great. Honestly, I read it more before bed time than in the only room of the house I get any quiet, so depending on how tired I am, I can find a story that's just right before I get too sleepy. This book is great for trivia lovers and those that like reading something that makes you go, "huh, how 'bout that..."

About the Author

BEN MILLER is an award-winning filmmaker and author. He is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, was the winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant for screenwriting, and has worked for legends such as Martin Scorsese and Roger Corman. He was the producer of the film Rage and Discipline, about pugilists in New York City. Miller's movies have appeared on Walt Disney Video, Sony Video, BET, HBO, Cinemax, and the Encore Channel. He currently serves as chef de salle at the Martinez Academy of Arms, one of the last schools in the world still teaching an authentic living tradition of classical fencing. He is active in the Association of Historical Fencing, and has written several articles for them focusing on the fencing and dueling of the American colonial period.

I bought this partly for the historic novelty factor, partly because I'm a student of combative who's always interested in expanding my knowledge, and partly because I thought this would make for a badass coffee table or personal library conversation piece. I genuinely like this book. I learned about both history and the technical/tactical sides of combatives. This is not a fine coffee book of European fencing. Nor is it a top quality training manual. What it is, is a sort of historical period work that puts the reader into another time and place where they can explore the topic of combatives in the Victorian Era. Enjoy.

I honestly thought I had already written a review of this but since I didn't it is incumbent upon me to right this terrible wrong!This is a super fun book learning about the Colonel and his adventures particularly about Jaguerina as heroic women in centuries pass don't get enough attention and representation matters. Both should be characters in a movie or hbo show. The pugilism part of the treatise had some great tidbits to think about and would probably make more sense today to a streetfighter or soldier than to a modern boxer equipped with heavy padding on their fists. Highly recommend.

I love the language used. It was politically incorrect and it was awesome. It was too the point very simplified and universal. This truly comes from the perspective of a man whom has been in many violent altercations. I highly recommend this book.

Col. Monstery was a well known fencing and self-defense instructor in New York and Chicago at the end of the 19th century. He led an amazing life before settling in the U.S. This book is a collection of a series of articles originally published in a local newspaper written by Monstery. The book includes Monstery's system of boxing, walking stick and two handed stick for use in self-defense. The book will be of interest both to those who are interested in historical martial arts but also anyone who is interested in learning self-defense for use in the modern day.

Cute book, nicely printed. Covers just what it claims to, although it is a historical reprint, so that should be expected. The images are well reproduced in this copy. Covers an array of fighting styles. More amusing from a historical perspective, but can be useful if you can decipher the language from a martial perspective. The words used to refer to specific actions aren't all that clear without the type of diagrams one finds in a modern martial arts manual. Unlike many historical documents, this one is thoroughly cited, which is even more fascinating, but most of these sources would likely be impossible to track down, like old newspapers, etc.

This complexity plays out in a fascinating narrative chronicling a truly amazing life rich with romance, peril and poetic justice. The content of Monstery’s manuscript will be of great interest to any history enthusiast, as it includes detailed descriptions of ancient arts which have all but died. An exciting added element is that one can gain further insight into their history and application by looking up Mr. Miller’s mentor at the Martinez Academy of Arms who is apparently one of the last known fencing masters with a direct lineage to many of the European martial arts similar to those mentioned in Monstery’s work. A sensational read, I highly recommend "Self Defense for Ladies and Gentlemen" and eagerly look forward to future literature by this author.

I signed up for a fencing class, and I wanted to read a little more about the sport. This book is fascinating, and if you're interested in history, an excellent view of what was expected of a gentleman in both skills, and attitude in the 19th century. If you're interested in the history of the sport, or in history in general, I definitely recommend this read.

There seemed to be such a large focus on intrigue, that emotion and motivation were left behind. I was often left wondering, “why did they do that?” This was especially true with the last reveal about Juliet. If Kate Atkinson’ point was to leave the reader feeling like they might never understand, nor should they trust, anyone, even characters in a book, she succeeded.

Though I heartily enjoyed Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels, it's been downhill in recent years. Transcription had the promise of an interesting WWII theme, a woman narrator, and an offbeat view of "the war at home" and postwar England. While some of this novel was engaging - figuring out the foreshadowing and plot hints - the unflagging chatty asides (like this, you see?) combined with uneven pacing and hard-to-distinguish male characters results in a disappointing effort all around. The final straw was the massive plot download at the end, which makes one wonder if the author, like this reader, simply tired of the whole affair.

After a strong review in The NY Times, perhaps my expectations were too high. The first half of the book is bland, excepting its description of London at the time. The second half seems to me about a wholly different Juliet, even allowing for some maturation, with events and twists coming unexplained and unmotivated, as far as I could discern. Why did Godfrey refuse to acknowledge her anyway? Was there even a hint in the prior 300 pages of the final reveal?

Ok, so I really did love this book. The characters I thought were well-developed, Juliet was intelligent, witty, and daring. The plot was engaging, and I really enjoyed the humor. It was very dry, and it often popped up at just the exact right moment. I knew I was going to finish the book no matter what at only 3% in based off this unexpected and hilarious gem:"The cat, a ginger one--they were the worst type of cat, in Juliet's opinion--had jumped up on the desk and bitten her--quite sharply, so that she couldn't help but give a little yelp of pain. It then proceeded to roll around on the desk before rubbing its face on the microphone and purring so loudly that anyone listening must have thought there was a panther loose in the studio, on that was very pleased with itself for having killed a woman."The humor was honestly delightful. However, with all of that being said, I did struggle to connect with Juliet for quite a few more chapters than I usually like. She was very distant to me. There wasn't anything that really gripped me about her one way or the other, until her far more subtle character finally started shining through... So that made it a bit difficult to engage with the story for a long time. And then as other reviews have mentioned, there are some pacing problems. I really dislike books that are full speed ahead until a certain turning point in the book, not close enough to the end, and then they suddenly swap over to a slower pace. Which was very much the case with this book. There were twists I didn't see coming at all, and I absolutely LOVE that, but I felt I would have enjoyed it slightly more had the pacing issues been worked out.Overall though, I'm very much not sorry I read it. It was another fantastic novel by Ms Atkinson! Not quite my favorite of hers, if you know what I mean, but well worth the purchase!!!

I had looked forward to a good, World War II spy story, but this one disappointed on many levels. The jumping around in time is clunky and does not have smooth transitions thereby disrupting the story. The narrative begins with a slightly affected way of thinking and speaking; fortunately that wanes somewhat as the plot kicks into action. The main character is not developed in a way that shows consistency. She is described as being regarded highly by her work superiors, but if they are flattering her to simply obtain favors from her, they’ve made a grave error. She kept making pretty dumb mistakes; lying at her interview, telling poorly-contrived falsehoods for her cover story at social/spying events, then not coming clean on her mistakes thereby compounding them, etc. I wanted to like her and sympathize with her, but she wasn’t the friendliest person. On a social scale also, her actions don’t seem consistent. She goes out and parties most nights and one logically assumes there is some mingling with the opposite sex. But then she shows clear unsophistication or naivete as she wonders why her supervisor doesn’t make romantic gestures. As a spy, she’s untrained. She doesn’t seem to realize until belatedly, that if she’s going to mingle with bad-intentioned people during wartime, then she and anyone leaving these events will likely be spied upon. And that’s just the beginning of the story. When the action does finally speed up, it is not a slick, spy story. Rather, her character and those she works closest with can best be described as inept.
