Elizabeth White is an author and aging solutions advocate for older adults facing uncertain work and financial insecurity. Most recently she served as Special Advisor to the Executive Director of Senior Service America. Before joining SSA, she was the Chief Operating Officer of a midsize non-profit focused on improving economic conditions in Africa. She is also an entrepreneur, having co-founded and led a chain of decorative home stores in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York. She began her career in international development at the World Bank. Ms. White earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Masters in International Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a BS in Political Science from Oberlin College. The Pete the Cat books are GREAT, but the ones written without Mr. Eric aren't nearly as good as the ones to which he was a contributor.

I have been to Key West several times and love it. This book brings back memories of my trips. The pictures are gorgeous and the reading includes historical information - very enjoyable to read. The back section includes home plans of various styles of Key West homes. My only complaint is I wish the pictures that correspond with the home plans were actually pictures like the rest of the book (they are renderings).

Truth up front; I barely started reading and found a glaring error which has put the veracity of the rest of the book in doubt. In trying to explain when to use "lay" versus "lie" the author stated the past tense of "lie" is "lay" which is correct. She then demonstrated the correct usage with this sentence; "Five minutes ago, she told him to "lay" down on the floor and bark like a dog." That is incorrect. "Lie" is correct because it is linked to the "to" infinitive (the object clause of the the verb "told") and not used as the past tense verb in this sentence. "Told" is the past tense verb in the sentence. Correct usage of past tense "lie" is, "Yesterday, I lay there thinking about my mom."I'm not sure I'll read any more of this book. I may know more than the author.

It's been +30 years since my teachers pounded grammar lessons into my brain. I was interested in a refresher. Jenny is extremely knowledgeable and the examples are well done. My 3 Rating had little to do with how well she taught the subject. My rating was due to frustration over constant innuendo, "whores", "penises", etc.I play MMOs and General Chat is full of genitalia discussions; copulation adventures with someone else's mother and language to troll dispute. I am not prudish to a culture intent on sexual prowess and promiscuity. I just wasn't invested into a grammar book that used it as a foundation to learning. Otherwise it IS a good book.

Although this is a basic grammar book, it is well worth reading. Jenny Baranick managed to make grammar rules entertaining with her slightly off-color examples. I will never view Goldilocks, Paris Hilton, and Johnny Depp the same way. The transition from print to e-book format did not work. The examples were too small and hard to read, but her commentary was thorough and circumvented that problem. I highly recommend this book.

If you want a tilillating, provocative peep under the covers and into the inner sanctum of good grammar and punctuation, “Kiss My Asterisk” by Jenny Baranick will fill the bill. But be warned: the author’s unique pedagogical approach definitely does not include the dry, academic rules generally associated with learning the fine points of English grammar. Slightly irreverent and decidedly naughty allusions may make you want to shove your Strunk and White “Elements of Style” handbook back in the drawer in lieu of much more entertaining grammar lessons! If you need to know whether you should “lay” or whether you should “lie” the leather whip down by the handcuffs, check chapter one and it will set you straight about those kinds of pesky spelling errors. References to penis envy when viewing Michelangelo's David form a slick segue to the introduction of plural pronouns. The topic of sending embarrassing emails was deftly covered by comparing hitting “send” too early to premature ejaculations. Need to know once and for all whether or not size matters? The chapter on en, em and hyphen dashes will set you straight. Or if you need advice on whether to use numerals or words in describing how many orgasms are faked every day, it’s all there. So set your expectations aside and buckle up for a great ride into the world of better writing. I loved the book!

I was looking for a quick, entertaining reference to help remind me of all those pesky little details I've become sloppy about using. I've recently had the need to write a couple professional letters, and upon my proofreading, found that I could benefit from a grammar review. No matter how often one writes, or in which format one writes, good grammar never goes out of style. Grab a snack and a glass of wine, and begin to smile and laugh your way back to better writing.

So sad that you feel such a need to use sexuality like you do. Also, you do no seem to have a firm grasp on the subject; overcompensating with lewd illustrations didn't help.

Hilarious! Grammar being fun and funny?!! Imagine! I am from the dangling participle generation. If they used humor at this level in schools we would be a grammatically superior nation!

It was nice to learn and have fun at the same time. I also realized I did learn a lot of this in school, but have gotten into bad habits from reading other people who had bad habits, and thinking they must be right. I know I'll screw up again, so I'm glad I have the book to rely on. ... I hope I spelled rely right. : )

I've used DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for several trips around Europe and have not found another guide book that's better. With all the concise information it's easy to plan my trip before leaving. The removable, take-with street map is always in my bag when I head out for my daily wanderings, and the map of public transport systems makes knowing how to get from point to point a breeze, especially since the book explains how to use the various modes of transport. I wouldn't think of going anyplace without first reviewing my DK Guide. The DK Eyewitness Pocket Map and Guide is also highly recommended as an on-site, easy to carry adjunct to the bigger main guide book

I usually love DK books, including the travel guides. But the DK Venice guide needs work. It doesn't mention San Giorgio Maggiore at all, which is really an unforgivable omission. The index is not usable -- Gallerie dell'Accademia is listed only under "Accademia" and "Museums and galleries", not under its full name although the index does list "Galleria d'Arte Moderna" under its full name. The guide seems like a work-in-progress and they just went to print because of some deadline, not because it was actually good to go.

This book gives you more insight then what you can find on YouTube and online blogs. I totally recommend you get this book if you're planning on traveling to Venice. I traveled to Venice in 2012 and found after reading this book I've missed out on so much. DK Eyewitness Travel Guide did an amazing job. Thanks a lot!

Packed with all kinds of great information, particularly about museums (art, history, and archaeology), historic sites and buildings, and other cultural features. I've used DK guides for years and love their maps, graphics, and excellent writing.

I am very disappointed to see that only 1 (Venice & The Veneto) of the 4 books (others: London, Paris, Rome) I just received has the glossy paper that used to make these books so worthy and pleasant to read. I wonder what happened, but would like to have the other kind of paper and binding.

There are a lot of books to prepare this exam,but the method provides a guide to presentthe exam in some weeks or some monthsaccording to the need and case. It is acondensed guide that allows the student tomanage the time and the wide material.

I bought this book but never used it until the last day before I took my GRE. I think the other reviewers are posting on the wrong edition for this book, I found no errors. Actually I wish I would have spent more time with this book. It is straight forward and covers the material that shows up on the real test in the new format. Great book.

This book might be helpful for the basic strategies to solve math and other problems, but you will need to ignore their actual answers. Many math problems have both the wrong answers and wrong results of each step to get to them.For example: To solve 0.0009 x 500 x 0.04 x 20 = ???, one step shown is "multiply 9 x 4 x 5 x 2 = 36 x 10 = 3600" (should be 360). Then they say to count the decimal places that were moved to get to the simplified equation. However, they only look at two of the numbers in the equation instead of all four. They say move the decimal in the result 6 to the left since .0009 and .04 required moving the decimal 4 to the right and 2 to the right. They ignore the 500 and 20 values.TWO MISTAKES IN ONE PROBLEM!The right answer is 360 with decimal moved 3 to the left = 0.36They say it should be 3600 with decimal moved 6 to the left = .0036

This book has soooo many errors, that you constantly have to double check the answers to make sure that they are, in fact, accurate. There are plenty of mathematical miscalculations, as well as mismatched answer choices! Example Sentence Completion: "People often misrepresented his _______ sense of humor and allowed their feelings to be hurt." Answer choices: A. arbitrary B. axiomatic C. eclectic D. fallible E. mordant. Right answer: E. mordant. Right? Wrong. The answer sheet will tell you that the right answer is in fact D, because "the best choice is D, because Mordant means...." Very frustrating!

I was excited to see a book that had a clearly laid out homework plan for how much time one might need. I found everything I read to be a good review. The biggest problem I found was that there were many typos, and mistakes made by the publisher on the practice problems. Math is straightforward, and there is always an answer. For example, a question would say "simplify 1/4 times 21/5", but then explain the answer using "1/4 times 5/21". It makes you feel like you are wrong when the book messed up. Too many simple mistakes that should have been fixed before publishing.

This book is a waste of time because it is ridiculously full of errors. There are plenty of practice problems, but a huge percentage of them are not correct. Sometimes the equation in the problems section doesn't even match the equation in the answers section. Other times, a silly addition or subtraction mistake was made in the supposed correct answer choice. This book is only useful if you plan to be a teacher and need practice correcting careless mistakes.

The previous reviews were posted prior to the copyrighted release of the 2nd edition of the book (2011). For example, the question posted by drew is corrected in the book I have. I believe the book even has a different publisher than the first.
