I purchased this eText Access Card and when I tried to use it an error message appeared. I figured something was wrong with the Pearson's system so I used the temporary login that Pearson provides for students. Now the temporary access is over and the access code provided by the seller still doesn't work at all. It keeps showing error code 84. I paid over $100 for an access code that doesn't work and Pearson won't replace it with a new working access code because it wasn't purchased from the University. I never write bad reviews but this just isn't righ!!.

Not sure how to rate this product. It does what it says.

I need this because it's required for a class I'm taking, but the software is just horrible. If you don't do anything exactly the way it wants you to do it, it docks you. I hate online classes in general but this one takes the cake. The program is just plain frustrating to use. If you already know how to use these programs, you would be much better off attempting to test out of this program if possible. Credits aren't worth the hassle you have to go through with this.

One Pearson access card is not the same as the other. You need to make sure the ISBN from your instructor matches what Amazon is selling. If you have your course ID and ISBN from Amazon, you can get with Pearson support to make sure they are go together.

Its everything that I needed! Thanks!

Immediately emailed me my code. When I received the physical copy, it came with very helpful instructions and a little sweet surprise!

It worked for me. I called Pearson customer service and they were able to help me.

Code did not work. DO NOT BUY!

Review

“[Moral Politics] isn’t just an ‘issue-by-issue debate.’ . . . [It is an] unusual mix of judicious scholarship, tendentious journalism, and inflammatory wake-up call.” (San Francisco Chronicle, praise for the previous editions)“Lakoff, the cognitive linguist, understands ‘how’ you understand . In Moral Politics, [he] deftly applies that seemingly arcane understanding to the heart of American politics. . . . Even those who disagree with him will profit deeply from encountering his challenging ideas.” (Christian Science Monitor, praise for the previous editions)

Possibly noble in intent but uselessly far off the mark. The "Strict Father Morality" reflects none of the dozens of Conservative families I know personally or the outcomes of the hundreds of Conservatives I know by acquaintance. The Strict Father Morality reflects only families I have known to be ravaged by severe alcohol or drug addiction, or by a severely abusive relationship between the parents. In neither case does the disfunctional family correlate to particular political or spiritual values. To the writer's credit, he states up front that he is a Liberal, although the point quickly becomes moot by the author's framing of issues being "compared".Nice read for the Liberal looking for a feel-good boost to inaccurate stereotypes of Conservatives and a review of one-sided Liberal framed talking points. However, accurate information about Conservatives, or underlying values, is not explained or used for comparison.A long-winded but basic primer of the basis for the Liberal self-adoration and self-adulation which results in elevation of personal feelings overruling law or consistent moral values.

This is the best non fiction book that I have read in decade. George Lakeoff explains what the right wing and left wing of our political parties are all about. Both sides attest to being moral but the differences in thought are amazing. The current administration is explained when I have been pulling out my hair trying to figure out what is going on. WTF is now explained in clear language.

Back in April 2017, I read Jonathan Haidt’s “The Righteous Mind”, which explored the split between the so-called individualists and social liberals. This book of Lakoff’s is kind of the prequel to “Righteous Mind” in that it offers to explain the origins of the two opposing worldviews of conservatives and liberals. Lakoff is a cognitive linguist, the study of worldview as expressed through concepts, language, and reasoning.I discovered this book by coming across an 8-page excerpt posted on the internet. I then went right for the book because ever since mid-2016 I’ve been trying to understand the drivers of Trump’s successful presidential campaign.Lakoff remains as “neutral” as possible for the bulk of the book (the first 19 chapters). Only in the final four chapters does he break character by first confessing he is himself a liberal, and explaining why in detail. The main text appears unchanged from the 1996 first edition. All the examples are Clinton era. The second edition (2002) added a 38-page afterword commenting on issues through the early Bush II presidency. The current third edition (2016) added a 20-page afterword on more recent issues (Trump appears there but hadn’t yet gained the nomination). In summary, a fascinating and highly rewarding read. I haven’t regarded a pontificating TV pundit the same way since.

We as a nation are in a political struggle for the soul of America. I am desperately trying to understand the divide in an effort to work together civilly without rancor and hate filled rhetoric. This book is a scholarly exploration and is not an easy read. I generally consume 10-30 pages and highlight key points. His observations are enlightening but not giving me much hope so far. I haven’t finished it yet and am waiting for some conclusive and helpful pointers to move the debate forward. At its essence it illustrates why and how we see and perceive the world sooo differently. One thing we all must do is VOTE

It's like watching, indeed being part of, a large game you were not aware was being played. George Lakoff explains the rules, who is on each team (and the surprising reason why), and what each teams goals are, and why neither teams goals are logical. Hopefully this book gives you a few insights, a little less fear, and a bit of respect for people on the other team.

Moral Politics is amazing in its analysis and solves the mystery of why liberals and conservatives have such different views on political issues. I teach a critical thinking class at a community college and have taught this book in that class with great success. It's truly enlightening, especially in light of the recent election and the confusion surrounding it.

Tough going, but an absolutely vital book for understanding how the two main factions in our country can see such completely different worlds: they have completely different understandings of good and bad, right and wrong.

Not everyone will agree with the conclusions but everyone will learn more about why they hold their opinions. Sometimes hard to read because of repetition.

We loved how well made this game is. The quality is great for the price. Easy enough for our 4 year old to play. The variety of the dinosaurs presented is also vast enough that children/players get introduced to dinosaurs that are beyond the fantastic four (trex, triceratops, stegosaurus, & of course brontosaurus) the drawings are very eye pleasing too.Only wish that they would have invested in adding maybe one or two dino fact of the dino shown on the calling cards. Aside from that very very happy with my purchase. If said game would get lost like kids tend to lose things of this nature, I would definitely buy again!

We are amazed at how well our 4 year old has learned all the different dinosaurs.

Fun and easy to play. While family can play.

This game looks cute, but is really boring to play. Furthermore, there are 48 different dinosaurs and no pronunciation guide. Unless you are already familiar with names like Therizinosaurus, Micropachycephalosaurus, and Sinosauropteryx, or you’re willing to google the pronunciation of each dinosaur as you play, you’re going to wind up referring to half of the dinosaurs as “this guy.” It would be much more educational if the kids were learning the correct names of the dinosaurs.

High quality game, with real dinosaur names. My 8 and 9 year old are obsessed with dinosaurs and are super offended by cartoon anything, and this game is really great that it has all scientific dinosaur names and thick high quality bingo cards. Hours of play

This is a great game. Quality made. My 5 year old grandson loves to play it with us.

From the Author

Welcome to the world of tomorrow! One of my favorite lines from Futurama is, "Welcome to the world of tomorrow!"  In fact, my 12-year-old asks me to announce it every time he descends the stairs.  That line is especially applicable to this book... coding is the world of tomorrow, and I am elated to welcome you to it! Learning to code is something every kid can do, and it should be a fun, creative experience.  There are so, so, so, many programming languages with which you can begin -- Scratch, JavaScript, Python, App Inventor -- but I am personally a fan of MicroWorlds EX, the language I use in this book.  Diehard computer programmers may ask, "WHY?!?!? -- that's a teaching language."  That's true!  It's a Logo language developed originally by Seymour Papert of MIT.  Many K-12 schools and even some universities, including Stanford (in the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab), introduce students to coding using MicroWorlds, StarLogo and other Logo languages because they build the programming foundations AND spark the confidence and curiosity needed to keep new coders engaged.I love MicroWorlds EX because it features a large workspace for designing your app's GUI, fun graphic design tools, a built-in compiler/interpreter, simple dialog boxes and palettes, and a pane for writing procedural code -- all in one place.  It's a step up in complexity over Scratch (because, like in "real" coding, kids actually have to type using correct vocabulary and syntax), but it preserves the easy ability to create graphics, execute code, and obtain debugging clues.  It's also simple to install MicroWorlds EX, and once installed, kids don't need access to the Internet to code.  The book comes with a free, downloadable trial of MicroWorlds EX -- 35 days -- long enough to complete the projects inside.  If, by working through the projects, kids find they love programming (and I hope they do!), then purchase of the book and use of the trial will have motivated them to expand their horizons, trying new projects and also new languages.  For kids who find they love MicroWorlds EX like I do, they can obtain a deep discount on a forever version of the software ($29 as opposed to the standard $99). Regardless of which programming language your young coders work in, I hope they find the project ideas presented in this little book fun, instructive, and motivational for writing their own code and developing their own cool projects. My heart leaps when I see students bring the ideas out of their heads and into the world, creating digital artifacts through coding and physical ones through making.  It's an amazing time to be a kid, and I applaud the adults who are working hard to support this next generation of ingenious inventors, the very people who will design... the world of tomorrow!

Anyone who has tried to learn to code as an adult, as I have, knows that it is like learning a second language, As with any language, the earlier you can learn it, the more proficient you will be, so it follows that teaching kids to code at an early age is the way to go.This book, in particular, is a pretty fun way to get started with coding. Even if your child is not going to become a computer programmer, a knowledge of coding will be an invaluable tool to have. At the very least, the ability to customize HTML and CSS for web pages is something that is likely to become a requirement for entry-level jobs, if it hasn't already. There is a lot packed into the 127 pages here. The author has written the book in a manner that, along with a multitude of illustrations, makes this potentially daunting subject very accessible, and the fun projects she has devised to teach basic principles of coding include:-- making a drawing app,-- creating a space game, and-- making a coin toss sim, and-- creating a digital pet, among others.Software is required to create the projects, and the book gives readers access to MicroWorldsEX (for both Mac and Windows) for that purpose. There is a free trial period after which the software is available at a discount. A benefit to using MicroWorldEX is that kids do not have to have access to the internet to use it, which is something parents will appreciate. The author's instructions for using the software are very clear and easy to follow. I particularly like the way she has included the idea of brainstorming and then making a "game plan" to help kids organize their thoughts about what they are going to create. Disorganization and coding do not play well together, so learning those concepts will help prevent a lot of frustration later. Although the book is geared for ages 7 - 11, the youngest ones may need some help. The main thing here is that kids will be able to learn correct coding syntax to create actions and animations that can be used in many applications. Those are skills they will use long after they've completed the projects in this book.

Not bad. You get a 35 day trial, and then you have to buy the software to go with the book...wish I would have known that!

This book has no value. First thing one must do is download the program and it comes with the same instructions - plus it makes changes to some default settings. Better to teach children Microsoft "Paint". Then they can "code" on their computer at home too.

good

This book does not educate on coding. It simply provides steps for the computer and that's it. I expected it to provide resourceful knowledge to coding and not just provide steps and projects to do on the computer.

Have to buy an additional book for this. Which I can not find

I like the easy going style, language and layout of this book. It's a great introduction to coding for kids who are interested or even those who may be and just don't know it yet. The book does a good job of easing the presumably young reader into a developer's mindset of planning, coding and debugging. The software of choice here is MicroWorlds EX. There is a free trial and you can also buy the unrestricted version for a fraction of the normal cost. I think the full purchase is worth it as long as the child plans to commit and stick to the program. Despite the cutesy art, seemingly easy language and targeted audience of the book, MicroWorlds is a robust coding tool that can definitely put a child on the path to mastering other more challenging languages. In fact, I think this book could be just as useful to adults as it is to children. As a developer myself, I know how hit or miss many "how to" or "Intro to..." tech books can be. Many tech authors don't do an effective job of teaching. Their tech books are hurt by convoluted wording, confusing and often unnecessary technical jargon or pacing that is either too slow or too brisk. The books are typically used more as reference guides by those who already know the material rather than learning guides for newbies. There are no such issues with this book. The pacing, language and projects in this book are all nicely executed. The completed projects will immediately boost confidence and provide noticeable results that will encourage young minds to reach higher. With the big push toward more STEM courses, kids need every advantage they can get as early as they can get them. As the book says early on, it used to be enough to read, write and do mathematics to be educated. These days, employers want more. Coding probably seems like typical "do I really need to learn this" elective learning. However, as the world continues moving deeper and deeper into the ever-evolving world of technology, it makes tons of sense to prepare children with as much knowledge as possible as early as possible. This book is one of many helpful tools to do just that. Definitely worth a look.

“Getting Started with Coding” has 120 pages, 7 chapters and is published by the publishing house that has been so successful with the “Dummies” series of books. To understand the book and get your child involved, you need a computer running a modern version of Windows or Mac OS, an internet connection, and the “MicroWorlds EX” software which comes as a free download at [...] with this book. Chapter 1 (“Project 1”), “Get Started” is a simple, colorful and easy to understand introduction to begin by downloading the software, to understand the website’s interface for MicroWorlds EX and to get help, if needed, at [...]. Project 2, entitled “Quick Draw,” allows the child to decorate the screen with colors and different angles for viewing. The following chapters are approachable, non technical and easy to understand.I look forward to giving this book to my ten (10) year old grandson who has taken free introductory coding classes at the local Microsoft store. It is okay to be a geek. In fact, it is wise and "cool" to be one.

I don't know how I've lived 21 years without this book. It's absurdly beautiful and will move you beyond words. I first borrowed this from my library, but before I even got a page through I knew I'd have to buy a copy of my own to reread and study. It's definitely one of my favorite books. I'm honestly thinking about buying several copies to give to my friends and family so they have no excuse not to read it, it's that good. This should be required reading for everyone on Earth. If you're wondering whether or not to read it, I'll make a decision for you: DO IT. You won't regret it.

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.”This quotation from the classic book by Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, illustrates why these writings have been popular for so long. This reviewer remembers getting his first copy of the book in Boston during the early 1950's, when it was widely circulated among college students at the time, as well as young adults who were starting out in that decade. It had a fresh take on the institutions of life, and offered that generation a sense of breaking away from convention without being particularly radical. It was a way to be non-conforming, without departing too far from traditional values. This may explain why it surged in popularity in the 1960s, when the generation coming of age at that time had a new kind of permission to break away, yet have a sense of a valid value system at the same time. To read and talk about The Prophet became a quite "cool" thing to do. Gibran's work had been around for a long time, but it is the type of literature that has a way of being rediscovered as each new generation comes along. This is at least partially why it retains its popularity over so many years.

I lost my original copy forty or so years ago. You can read it a thousand times and you'll learn something every time you read it. I plan to be buried with the copy I just bought. There is more wisdom within it's pages and if you live by the lessons taught there you're sure to live a much richer life. Try reading it with your soul mate.

This is the most beloved, and masterfully written poetic essay by Artist, Philosopher, and Writer, Lebanese-American Author Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), he paints a colorful picture with words describing the Human Condition. This book has 26 prose poetry fables written in English, and published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf.Highly in demand it is always being printed, and has been translated into 40 languages.107 Pages long, it takes about 13 hours to read. The Prophet's main character is named Almustafa, the setting is he has been away from home 12 years and he is about to broad a ship to take him home, when he is stopped by a group of people, and he discusses topics that have to do with the human condition.Dealing with the rigors of love, marriage, children, giving, eating, drinking, work, joy, sorrow, houses, clothes, buying, selling, crime, punishment, laws, freedom, reason, passion, pain, friendship, talking, time, good, evil, prayer, self knowledge, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.I really like this book because reading it has enlightened me, even though it can be difficult to fully comprehend, this book is very thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry and classic literature.

Timeless poetic stories That bring out the best. This was recommended to me by a friendly waitress on evening. Since then we've been recommending books to each other every time I see her. This recommendation was a unexpected treat. Take the time to read and enjoy its warmth! You'll be recommending this to strangers just as she did to me, making friends in the process. I guess that's the kind of magic this book holds. Happy Reading!!!

My lifetime favorite. I was introduced to this book in the '70s and I have never turned it down since then. I've kept on going back again and again to its beautiful and poetic messages. This book is so timeless and so inspiring that I couldn't keep quoting and sharing Kahlil's words with my kids, relatives, coworkers and friends. This is a book that I intend to introduce even to my grandchildren someday.

Save your eyes and do not purchase this particular copy!! Seriously, the book is only 38 pages.... so let's use the tightest, smallest font possible!? That makes noooo sense. This copy Is more like a 'phamplet' and not so much a bound book. I do not even require reading glasss yet I seriously will never read this copy. Seriously, it's maybe an 8 point font.If you want my copy, let me know. Sooooo frustrating and ridiculous.

I purchased this book as a replacement to the one I had given away. This is one of my all-time favorite books and truly a classic. No matter what religion or belief you have, this book will apply and you will relate to it. This is one to read over and over during the course of your lifetime and to share with loved ones, and alsowith people that you just think may need to read it.

While hopelessly adrift after losing my spouse, I ordered this book, along with several others. Initially, while reading it I was put off by the format and the fact that is centers around events, and then has passages by many different people. When I started reading it, I questioned why I should be listen to someone who's spouse died from cancer, leukemia, or in a car accident if my spouse did not. So, I put the book down and moved on to another one.A few months later while sifting through my wife's copious possessions and belongings, I saw the book, and started reading the chapter appropriately entitled, "The Belongings." I was stunned and humbled by the writings of the contributors and it finally clicked in my head about the purpose and meaning of this book.Everyone who loses a spouse suffers through a different and unique experience, but there are common threads that connect all of them. This book is a perfect companion that offers insight and words from those who have experienced a similar loss. It is not from some detached academic engaged in mental masturbation for personal gain - this is raw emotion. In fact, after my best friend's wife recently passed away from cancer at the age of 53, I gave him a copy of this book to help him cope with the ongoing and daily struggle that survivors must undertake.

Probably this book hits home with many people. A spouse is losing their other half almost on a daily basis especially if you live in a senior environment. Spouses all seem to go through the first period of being in a fog. Then they get forgetful and start to worry about their memory. Then they wonder how to plan the service. Many of the men and women go through their experience and you will find you are not alone. Excellent read.

Very good book, Thank you!!

An amazing journey of love, loss and moving on!

Hope you never. Need.. This but ifYou do It will helpH

Grief is such a difficult topic yet the writers in this book are so unbelievably brave to tell their individual stories. Each chapter gives the reader insight into what they were thinking and feeling during such a difficult and painful time in their lives. The stories are inspirational, heartfelt and hopeful. Every person who has grieved the loss of a spouse but feels alone needs to read these stories so they don't feel so isolated. This is a must read for anyone who has lost a spouse. Thank you Grief Diaries for bringing this difficult topic as well the others in this important anthology into our homes and hearts.

Stories of pain, courage, and inspiration for those who have lost a spouse. For anyone traveling this dark path of grief, the Grief Diaries series of books can offer light and hope. Knowing that others have gone down this path before you, and survived, can be healing.

Grief Diaries Anthology Series is here to support you. I shared my own personal journey as a contributor to Loss of a Parent and became part of a beautiful community sharing stories of love, loss, pain and hope. Each story is intimate, unique and beautiful in its own way guiding you through the emotions of grief and helping you realise "We are not alone".

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Picking up just weeks after A Study in Charlotte ended, Jamie Watson and Charlotte Holmes are on their Christmas break in London. Their friendship has taken a few steps back, though, and things seem tense. After Holmes's mother turns suddenly ill and her beloved uncle Leander goes missing, the game is afoot. The pair travel across Europe from Berlin to Prague, bickering all the way yet still making a great team. The book is nearly all from Watson's perspective, as was the first title in the trilogy, but a few chapters at the end are from Holmes's view, and they are worth the wait, filled with turns of phrase that only she could dream up. This delightful sequel introduces a mystery on a grander scale with much higher stakes while staying true to the flavor of an original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story. There are new characters, a kidnapping, poison, art fraud, narrow escapes, danger, drama, and a final twist with a heap of delicious, complex sleuthing that will keep readers guessing until the end. No one is ever what or who they seem. VERDICT A strong purchase for fans of A Study in Charlotte and where mysteries are popular.—Kristen Rademacher, Marist High School, IL

This book was an angsty, annoying and abruptly-ended shame of a follow-up to A Study in Charlotte. Let me explain why I feel that way, but be warned, there are spoilers ahead.I enjoyed A Study in Charlotte. I read it during a few hours on a lazy afternoon, and it was good! It kept my interest with an interesting mystery plot moved along by regularly paced action and clues dropped like breadcrumbs. It wasn't anything near the caliber of a true Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie work, but it was interesting and engaging, and if it sometimes went a bit off the rails into long introspective rants about how *unique* and antisocial Charlotte Holmes was, well, it was forgivable precisely because the plot kept moving forward to the inevitable climax with the villains exposed and the good guys winning the day. It works as a stand-alone novel and for a quick beach read or a couple of nights worth of bedtime reading, I would recommend it. My lazy afternoon turned into a lazy evening as I finished ASiC and almost immediately downloaded The Last of August to my Kindle. What a disappointment. The Last of August begins with a couple giant steps backward in relationship development between Holmes and Watson, and the first 20% (literally, I checked) of the book is just basically friendship/relationship purgatory or hell, a good portion of which sees Watson marooned at Holmes's family's estate in England. Holmes is there with him, but not speaking to him. Or speaking to him so rarely and so cryptically (for no discernible reason) that it is beyond boring and frustrating. Our sixteen-year-old protagonist spends a week of his Christmas break from school reading Faulkner all day in a window seat at the Holmes's (figuratively and literally) frigid estate. It's unrealistic because I don't know a single sixteen-year-old rugby-playing boy who would be reading Faulkner for pleasure every day of his school holiday, fine with being uncomfortable and ignored by his "best" friend at her awkward, upper-class family home when he could be hanging out with friends and family he doesn't get to see very often, soaking up his beloved London, watching movies or playing video games or doing really literally anything other than reading Faulkner while stuck in this weird, uncomfortable situation. But then! [The only sane person at the house] Uncle Leander disappears! The game is on. Our protags go to Berlin to continue Leander’s investigation and here things really start to fall apart. The investigation is BORING, and we know all along that the perpetrators are those evil ne'er-do-wells, the Moriarty siblings. It's just basically taken as a given that they are the bad guys behind Leander's disappearance (don't ask me why, because I still don't understand), and the book becomes less of a mystery and more of a search and rescue operation because those evil Moriarty siblings are the only ones who could possibly have done such a thing. Allegedly. We're told.August Moriarty joins Holmes and Watson as they investigate, and Milo Holmes is involved too, when there is need for a deus-ex-omnipotent-brother. Then he's gone again and our protags run around in cheap disguises talking to a few folks, seeing a couple of art installations and angsting HARD about their relationships to each other. Again the story bogs down on the issue of the Moriarty sibs, since it is unclear WHY they play the villain here. What in the world is their motivation? This is never explained to anywhere near a satisfactory level. Lucien wants revenge against Charlotte--that I understood. But Hadrian wants...some money? And Philippa wants money and...a really good gardener? What? Why would these supposedly super-rich villains go to the trouble of orchestrating the plot to poison Emma Holmes and disappear Leander at the cost of so much time and energy and manpower? And for what? Money? I guess the significant financial investment in messing with the Holmeses paid off in the end with painting sales? Maybe? That's another thing. Those meddling Moriarty kids (they're adults but so cartoonish in characterization that it felt right to borrow a phrase) sort of win. They sell all that art to Lena and despite the fact that our heroes are onto them, apparently the money actually does transfer from Lena's bank account for those forged paintings. It must, because Holmes talks to her about how she thinks the German government will repay Lena for the money she spent on the faked paintings. Set aside the fact that this is a completely bonkers assertion (why would the German government repay Lena for buying art that she knew was forged at an auction in the Czech Republic?? they wouldn't), the Moriarty sibs still got their millions in exchange for the fake paintings. And then to top it all off, in the end they escape. How very convenient and silly. Stop wasting pages on pages on pages telling us about Milo's complete control over a paramilitary force with unlimited resources if a couple of art forging slick talkers can escape his custody from handcuffs, several guards and a private plane with seemingly little difficulty. And then there is the "climax" of the book. The big reveal where the mystery is laid bare to the reader who should be able to piece together clues and motivations dropped throughout the story to have a satisfactory "ooohhh I see" moment at the end. That really doesn't happen here. Turns out Charlotte knew (nearly) all along that Leander was still at casa Holmes and even if Jamie doesn't hate her for the way she strung him along, I DO. What the heck was the POINT? She ran around Europe allegedly looking for her uncle but secretly just trying to bust the Moriarty sibs for a little art forgery. She did catch them, after paying them millions of dollars of Lena's money, and then apparently lost them again. Great job Charlotte. Really A+ work there. So the villains get away (which was probably always going to happen since Charlotte closed her little net without snaring Lucifer, oops I mean Lucien). Some friendly fire leaves August Moriarty dead (you KNEW that was coming because it’s there in the title of the book). Emma, Leander and Milo run away (?) and Alistair is evil (?) or just in money trouble (?) what?? And then, without telling us what the heck is going on, with sirens in the distance surely about to discover a dead Moriarty on the lawn of the ancestral Holmes estate, with only Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson to face the blame…fade to black. The book is over and I am pretty disgusted that I wasted my time on it at all.Whereas ASiC could have stood alone, TLoA cannot. It is a filler, a cliffhanger, and disappointment in character and relationship development and a boring, lackluster story riddled with angst and uncertainty. I do not recommend it.

I was incredibly luck to find an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book in advance of my pre-ordered copy arriving. This review is of that copy which, for clarification, I lucked into and did not receive from the publisher. I do own a copy of this book and will be editing this review when I re-read it.The Last of August cemented for me that this series is one of my favorites in recent memory. Ms. Cavallaro perfectly balances light-hearted humor, strong emotions, mystery, and drama. There are certainly wonderful things about these books apart from the characters; Cavallaro is a poet and her phrasing at points is perfectly efficient and utterly beautiful, the mystery in this book is stronger than in the first and keeps you on your toes as a reader, the greater Holmes family - introduced in this book - are a puzzle unto themselves, but ultimately your opinion on this book will live or die on what you think of Charlotte and Jamie.Jamie Watson is a marshmallow and I love him. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is full of emotion and cares deeply, even when he doesn't want to. I love that Jamie fills a role that is often given to female characters and that it doesn't detract from his masculinity or desirability. Poor, poor Jamie does not know what hit him when he's around the methodical calculating Holmeses and this book certainly shows that, but it also addresses the ways Jamie is good for Charlotte and it deepens his relationship with his father, who also knows the perplexities of a Watson-Holmes relationship.Charlotte Holmes - how I do love Charlotte and her obsessive need for control. Charlotte wants desperately to be in control, she wants desperately to be the most capable person in the room, but she also needs to be softened, to be tempered. Charlotte burns brightly but without friends she threatens to burn out. Charlotte needs people who respect her enough to push her to do and be better, but she's also deeply afraid that she is too broken to be happy. Oh, Charlotte, you are a panther, a leopard, a lynx; Fierce and smart and capable. This review has already devolved a bit into my rambling, so I'll end it with this:- if you liked [ASIN:0062398903 A Study in Charlotte (Charlotte Holmes Novel)] you will like this even more. It's everything good from book 1 but stronger and deeper and more.- if you were less enthusiastic about book 1 you might still like this, it depends on what you did or didn't like about book 1- if you need someone to gush about James Watson, Jr. or Charlotte Holmes with you ever, you know who to talk to.Upon finishing this book I immediately wanted to have the third book and was dismayed that I couldn't pre-order it already, a year or so in advance. That's how much I loved this book.
