I borrowed from my library four other books on papermaking before I ordered this. I should have read this one FIRST! (Problem was, no library in our system would let it out on loan.) I would have bought fewer supplies and been less puzzled by techniques demonstrated in the previous books.Mr. Grummer may have written at length about some of the techniques, but the photos were excellent at demonstrating what he described. Thanks to his photos, I was able to build my own frame from scrap wood and screening I had on hand. The author's encouragement and humor kept the instructions interesting. And my first try at making paper was satisfying. I went on to experiment with paper-recycling combinations and produced 23 sheets, all different. Those sheets, in turn, were used in one of a kind Christmas gifts.The author did a fine job, not only explaining techniques, but giving the reader enough understanding to modify the techniques to suit individual needs and available supplies.

Since the local craft store carries the Arnold Grummer supplies for papermaking, I decided to buy his book - Arnold Grummer's Complete Guide to Easy Papermaking. (Mr. Grummer also has a website.) The instructions in the book are very clearly illustrated by photographs. Many variations in colors and textures are shown. You'll need a frame set and cotton linter both available at the craft store, a blender and paper scraps. Easy to recycle old envelopes or paper (discard the black print which will turn the paper grey). Variations: Colored paper tints the pulp. Add dried flowers and leaves. Emboss wet pulp with brass stencil. Hot tip: When pressing out the excess water from the wet pulp, use a rolling pin!

For full disclosure I haven't tried making any paper yet.However, the book covers all the instructions I have read on the Web and YouTube.So I give it high marks for consistency.I am still accumulating all the stuff necessary to do it but its on the list and I will use his instructions when I do.I will update this review at that time

The Easy Papermaking Guide by Arnold Grummer is very good. The instructions which are accompanied by photos are easy to follow. He also has 2 or 3 pictures of the finished product for each technique that he demonstrates. I've watched many of his videos and I still learned other techniques from this book. I also like the fact that with using the book I can refer to it over and over and also have it by my side when I'm actually making paper.I would recommend this product.

This book is a wonderful addition for any serious paper maker. It goes into the science and history of the paper making origins. I really enjoyed it! I look forward to making my own paper this fall.

I found many of Grummer's tips and discussions on technique useful. I don't care for a deckle you pour into because it makes thick paper. I also don't favor flowers in my paper. I realize this is a personal thing. I skipped over those details. Otherwise, it is a useful book.

This really made me feel like paper-making was an accessible craft for everyone. It encourages experimenting and doesn't make you feel like you need to purchase anything special to create your first sheets of paper.

I have not had a chance yet to try any of the procedures in this book, but from a quick run-through, it looks like every detail is there, plus it is simple to read.The used seller was quick and the book as described.

I couldn't wait to go in search for some Taylor Pork Roll here in NC, and luckily found it at one of the more upscale supermarkets in my area. I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, where it was readily available, and my family and I all loved it. This is a great little cookbook that is welcomed to my rather large collection of cookbooks.

Gave as a gift for Christmas and the recipient was thrilled! Has been enjoying the tidbits of information on a local/regional product.

Turns out this is more of a novelty than a cookbook, but I'm glad to have it on my New Jersey bookshelf.

I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

I have been using this DK rome book for the last 15 years, so I know all the versions. This 2019 is a complete revamp. I suggest the 2018 version. The changes are: no more glossy pages (soft matte paper is used); no restaurant section in the back (they are interspersed on every page); elimination of almost 50 pages of history; a language section that is hilariously small print (I put on glasses to see it and still could not). In short, the changes to this book make it rather ordinary, and even hard to use. Even an image of the Pantheon mislabels where Raphael's tomb is. As someone who ordered this book annually, I can just say that the beauty, style, and colorfulness of this edition has been destroyed, and I urge all buyers to think twice before purchasing the 2019 version. I can't imagine going to Rome without some introductory history, and the editor of this new version must have been literally out to lunch when approving the new version.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city I’ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

COMPLETELY outdated. I looked up a few things online for further information and of the handful I checked, all but one were closed -- and had closed years ago.

I had heard of Lionel Terray many years ago, as a young man... probably when I read Maurice Herzog's "Annapurna", in junior high school, and perhaps once or twice after that. But in my recent reading of Ed Viesturs' "The Mountain: My Time on Everest", he mentioned that Terray's book had been translated from French into English, and the couple of excerpts Ed included in his text intrigued me. So I ordered "Conquistadors" on my Kindle feed.Terray's account of his early life and climbs is nothing less than fascinating. He narrates these events in an engaging style, neither self-aggrandizing nor unduly criticizing his contemporaries. If anything, Terray is overly generous in his praise of his fellow climbers in the Chamonix guides, the Himalayan expeditions, and elsewhere. His self-deprecating manner at times is wry but not overdone, in my estimation.As I read his book, I was repeatedly impressed by his accounts of various climbs, their challenges and cruxes, and so forth. He makes these incredible efforts sound as if they were effortless, particularly his climbs with his early partner, Gaston Rebuffat. Only when one views the photographs of some of these climbs at the end of the book does the scope of his understatement become clear! Terray's landmark climbs--the Walker Spur of the Grandes Jorasses, the Nordwand of the Eiger, and the southeast face of Fitzroy come particularly to mind, for me--were truly stunning achievements in their day, and would be a feather in the cap of any mountaineer of my time, and today.I'm an old fellow now and my climbing days are decades behind me. But reading Terray's memoir brought back a spark of excitement about climbing I haven't felt in years. I highly recommend this book.

Ed Viesturs mentioned this book a few times in his own works so after finally reading Annapurna I decided to give this a shot. I rated it 4 out of 5 only because Mr. Terray needed an editor who would have told him to pick one story and tell that. He should have stuck to mountaineering or his war experiences. It's a loosely woven memoir of his life but inconsistent on where he adds detail and what he skips over completely. It's a good read though--my guess is if you're a climber then the amazing detail of various climbs will be fascinating and thrilling to read. For a non-climber it got a bit tedious but I knew I wasn't the right demographic. The editor for this translation did a great job of annotating details that really needed explaining for English speakers and non-climbers and was much appreciated by this reader. If you're looking to read about the early days of climbing the 8,000 meter mountains read Annapurna and The Will To Climb, first then read this book--you'll want the context.

If you have read my other reviews on many of the mountaineering genre you will find that I personally find it very hard to find a modern mountaineering adventure story. Mountaineering literature is so suffused with the quest for money, huge personal egos and quests for climbing garbarge strewn summits that there is little time to note the adventure.In old mountaineering books they almost never have enough money, they climb with holes in their socks and equipment that make modern mountaineers shiver. They also summit and do routes of incredible complexity and skill that even modern mountaineers find hard to match -- and they all seem quite happy to hang off the Eiger North Face on a single piton...!Terray fits this genre par excellence. He was famous in his day, but his name is not often mentioned around campfires today... (he is perhaps the French equivalent of Moe Antoine of Britain). He climbed some very technical routes with many first ascents, but throughout the book, the amazing thing is that he also does a lot of very hard climbs that most people, even in mountaineering circles have never heard of, nor want to undertake... Hence I believe the Title of his book -- the conquering of brilliant but largely useless summits.Terry offers great and nailbiting vignettes of his climbs all over the world. Starting with climbing the Walker Spur, the Second Ascent of the Eiger North Wall, and the French Classic climb of the first 8000-metre summit, Annapurna. Each chapter is a real page turner. When you are in the middle it is hard to put down... you can feel the tension build in some parts such as the numerous traverses on the Eiger, the uncertainty of route finding... the terror of the long run outs of rope... where downclimbing is about the scariest option one can think of..The early work on the Eiger is well recounted and the rescue of the Cassin Expedition. He also covers a lot of ground on the climbing of Annapurna with no overlap with Herzog's classic. I was particularly impressed with the amount of bushwacking Terray and crew had to do just to get access to the mountain glaciers. They were using maps and entering valleys no outsider had seen. This raw adventure, lower than summit peaks with its route finding conundruns, waterfall climbing, backtracking down blind valleys, is supremely exciting. It is in fact a joining of the exploration genre with mountaineering.The other summits are just as stupendous but less known. Terray saw the South Ridge of Mt Hunter in Alaska and thought it the most beautiful he had seen. He had to climb it. While not high by Himalayan standards this Frenchman set a new North American standard with his long and arduous ascent.Also there is one of the most exciting (and rare) accounts of Alpine Mountain Warfare that I know. At the end of the war he was attached to the French Alpine Regiment. Despite his knowledge that the war in the Alps would never hasten the end of the war even a single day, he fought as a good soldier should. But one does admire Terray in other ways. If this front would not be decisive in any way, why kill people he mused? He therefore devised daring raids upon German Mtn Troops. On one of them they scale a couloir, climbed a rock face and bivvied in a snow cave on the opposite side of a rock outcropping. The next day they set up their machine gun and duly strafed the German positions -- "not really aiming at anyone and hoping to hit noone." After scaring the Germans silly he and his partner decamped and slid back to their camp. Mission accomplished and no one dead. His other exploits were not so bloodless as when they attacked a heavily defended German position up sheer rock faces under their supporting artillery fire --- but the effect and accurary required to pinpoint targets on ridges meant that most of the rounds missed and fell upon the cliffs with the resulting French Chaussers suffering their own friendly fire.I must add that there are a lot of pictures in the book about his climbs in Patagonia, but these only get a brief mention in the book. The fact that he was soon dead after this was published is also a tragic note on which to end. But here is pure adventure that this Frenchman lived and but that the rest of the world could discover his raw love for nature, the challengce of the climb and love for only adventure... A ripping yarn... Thank you Lionel!

Surpasses Annapurna as my favorite mountaineering book ! LT"s poignant writing style seems modern and fresh despite its age. His observations of daily life, amazing climbs, everyday life and even combat in WW2 are worth the price of admission. Highly recommended! RR

A good autobiography of a mountaineering legend. I enjoyed this book but can be tedious at times and when he gets to the climbs they are over and done with sometimes two paragraphs. seemed to spend more time talking about what he did in between climbs.

Recommended for enyone interested in mountaineering or mountains overall

I enjoyed the adventure and constant insights into each meaningful experience Lionel had throughout his mountaineering career. It was a pleasure to read his shifting attitude toward climbing and his newfound connection to the people of the land he visited. I’d love to watch the documentaries he filmed according the book.

I really enjoyed the well written, detailed accounts of his life. Goes well beyond climbing into the culture and life during the 2nd war in the French Alps.

"Sherlock Holmes On the Screen" -Revised edition is a great book for any Holmes fan's library. This revised edition goes in depth into the silent movies that featured Holmes and Watson. In order to keep things current, there are several pages devoted to the PBS production of "Sherlock " with Benedict Cumberbatch.Despite being called "On the Screen", the writer, Alan Barnes does not ignore the numerous radio shows devoted to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. According to the text, if it wasn't for the Holmes US radio broadcasts in the early 1940s, featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Sherlock & Dr. Watson would have ended their movie career after their 2nd film with 20th Century Fox, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Instead Universal would make 12 more films with Rathbone & Bruce, all with contemporary settings.If you are a fan of Holmes and Watson, read this book !!!

There are no words which seem to adequately describe just how good SHERLOCK HOLMES ON SCREEN: THE COMPLETE FILM AND TV HISTORY by Alan Barnes is: The word "comprehensive," while accurate, just doesn't seem to go far enough.A lifelong Sherlockian I purchased this handsome 288 page hardback updated edition with high hopes and I was not disappointed. Barnes decision to take an A to Z organizational approach may not be everyone's ideal, but he does provide a film and television chronology towards the end of the book to appease those of us who prefer that type of listing.As the title indicates every film and television appearance by the Sherlock Holmes character including a number of which I was previously unaware. Barnes gives more behind the scenes production notes, details of the mysteries and the solutions and in some cases these are quite extensive. For example I found the details behind the Peter Cushing television series of Holmes adventures fascinating and entertaining and his notes on what it took to bring SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE to the screen, entertaining and revealing. Who knew that the movie had been intended to be the start of a franchise - with the script for the second planned movie eventually being filmed as A STUDY IN TERROR with John Neville in the Holmes role.Barnes even includes movies and television episodes with more questionable ties to Sherlock Holmes. He gives high praise to Disney's animated THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE but the Spielberg produced YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES fares less well. In addition there are entries for the two STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION episodes that featured Prof. Moriarty and even THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN gets a mention for its Holmesian references.With listings that include not only alternate titles for the movies, but also surprisingly in depth cast listings, running times and some very rare photo's, this volume is a must-own for any self respecting Sherlock Holmes fan, and anyone with even a mild curiosity about the character.

This is a great reference book for the various film/TV appearances of Sherlock Holmes over the years. Includes full episode listings, cast listings, great photos, plot details, & interesting historys on how certain projects got made. The only thing that might vex some people is that the listings are alphabetical, not chronological.

Being a Sherlock Holmes fanatic induced me into purchasing this for my collection in the hopes of obtaining some new images of Rathbone, Richardson, and other Holmes actors. I also had an interest in learning the up-to-date status of each Holmes film ever produced. In that, this is a wonderful book, filled with pages upon pages of information, cast listing, and comments, as well as some rare images of aforementioned actors.The personal bias of the writer is the only thing that dampens a wonderful experience... namely because I tend to disagree with his assessments of certain Holmes films, particularly those of Basil Rathbone in his later career. I wished there were more images of Ian Richardson and Nicholas Rowe, but all together it's a wonderul purchase to add to any true Sherlockian collection.

My father LOVED this, he loves Sherlock Holmes both book and screen and has seen most of the film versions. Got this for his birthday and he started reading it immediately and told me how much he appreciated it.

Actually bought this as a Christmas present for my father (also a big Sherlock Holmes fan), who was extremely happy with the trivia, stories, and lists of movies in the SH universe.

Great book! Love Sherlock Holmes and this book is a great addition to my collection !

This educator has a good Romania friend and have never been to this great country. After examining a handful of Romanian full maps, this one was by far the most outstanding!!!

Michelin Maps are the best you can find on these countries. Do not wait to buy one in Romania as it will be of lesser quality and cost big bucks.
