I have several translations of Patanjali's yoga sutras - I like this better than some others because he actually includes the Sanskrit as well as his translation. None of the others I have do this. I just really like that I can see for myself what is being translated.

I had a miraculous improvement in just 5 weeks where blood pressure and pulse rate all improved by 15 points. I have a marginal high blood pressure for few years. I am still taking medication. The blood pressure clock has been set back by 15 years in just 5 week. The best blood pressure reading I got today was in Cardiologist's office which was 100/70. Last time I saw that kind of blood pressure was 15 years ago. The acid test will be if I can have normal pressure in 6 months with out medication. My meditation / breathing exercises are based on knowledge gained from other sources.The breathing exercises are called Pranayama (Breathing) Exercises. One can find more about it from various sources. The true knowledge dates back to Patanjali - the original text dates back to approximately 2200 years ago. Interpretation of Patanjali Sutras has also been done by Harvard professor. His book contains 900 plus pages.This book should be read a few pages at a time and contemplate. There is high degree of correlation between mind, stress, body and its functions. It must start with your faith in a system like a mustered seed mentioned in Bible. There are very few books stand out. Swami Satchidananda's book is one of them. Philosophy of Yoga can be dry for a cluttered mind. While his book is also more of a translation, he drives the theme of each verse/ sloka by telling a story, which makes the book interesting to read. While simplifying the explanation, he made sure that he drove the point to the reader.

Very earnest commentaries follow the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali at an honest cost, coherent with the spirit of the teachings. I'm an Angular developer, and I use RxJS a lot in my development. I picked up this book after having seen Randall at a couple conferences, and I wanted to see his take on things.This isn't a thick book, but it gives really good information on Reactive programming, RxJS, Angular, and Angular's Reactive Forms. It doesn't go into ngrx and Angular performance much, but the introduction it gives for both is solid.In my development, I really appreciate the power of reactive development and Reactive Forms, and it was good to see them taken seriously here (I think Reactive Forms in particular are underappreciated).The only part of the book (besides a line and hint here and there) that was new for me was the last chapter on writing a game in canvas. Pretty cool stuff.I teach classes on Angular through my company's Angular Boot Camp, and I'm going to suggest this book to future students as a resource for good Angular and web development.

You'll find practical tips and straightforward guidance on making the transition from "in-house to outsourcing" a successful one. Easy to read and in an engaging format!

This is the second novel about IT that I've read. The first was the Phoenix Project. I believe that this novel and that are clearly related, in approach if not necessarily in overall theme. I'm going to break down this book into two sections, one is the advice and concepts around outsourcing, and the second the novel itself.I work in IT. I'm not in management. I'm just a lowly producer, teacher, developer, author & evangelist. I'm not at the "C" level of my organization and I'm unlikely to get there. As such, outsourcing, and what's worse, off-shoring, are scary topics indeed. This book, Outsource or Else, was not written for people at my level. It's much more meant for the people at the "C" level of an organization. For those people, I think the advice in the book is extremely useful. The steps for choosing an outsourcing organization, which are discussed in more detail at the end of the book, seem to make sense to me. From that point of view, I think the book is successful. From the point of view that I'm looking at it, I don't see how outsourcing and offshoring work to make my life better, unless my organization is kept afloat by that act, and frankly, what then does happen to me or people like me. In the book they say "name one person who has been put out of work by outsourcing" and unfortunately, I can. Not just one. Quite a large number, including people who have had to travel overseas in order to train their replacements prior to losing their jobs. While this advice looks good for those at the "C" level, the rest of us... the picture just isn't so rosy as it gets painted in this book.The novel itself suffers from some of the same pains as the Phoenix Project. The characters are somewhat wooden. The plot has a pretty clear goal... it's all going to be GREAT in the end. Like the Phoenix Project, there is a character who, well, the best comparison is Yoda. He's Yoda. Oh yeah, a funny weird, quirky Yoda, but so was the original Yoda in the last good Star Wars movie. I'm sure there's another way to learn X in technology other than a Yoda-like guru who walks you through your process so that you arrive at the understanding that, like the main character, you're just outsourcing all wrong, even in your personal life. Each of the main characters has a personality quirk that sort of makes them unique, but not really. They're just placeholders for us to arrive at the parable of the story. And it's the parable that's important.However, the characters just didn't succeed for me the way they did in the Phoenix Project. Don't get me wrong, that book was poorly structured and poorly written too. It's primary goal was also the parable. However, it did create characters that I not simply could understand and identify with, but that I knew. I had worked with most of the people in the Phoenix Project (but not the Yoda character there). I think better characters would have moved this book to a higher level. I didn't see any of the "C" level people I work with and for in the characters in this book.Don't get me wrong. This isn't a bad book. I really do think the outsourcing advice, although scary, is sound. I appreciate the use of a parable as a way to teach (it has a long history). The approaches to technology mentioned in the book don't come off like buzzwords just tossed in. I believe, based on the book alone, that the authors have worked within IT, know it and understand it (although clearly not the fear and trepidation that outsourcing really can cause). All these positives are what lead me to give the book three stars. There is clear work and knowledge on display which has earned that. It's primarily the lack of characters and Yoda that drove the book down for me.

Disclosure: I was provided the book by the author for the purposes of writing a review.The short story: Do you need to get acquainted with outsourcing? Have you tried outsourcing but it didn't work? Read this book. You're going to get a qualified look on the outsourcing field, while having a nice time.This book is a new entrant on the "The Goal" category, where a distressed hero, Jason, is rescued by an out-of-this-worldly figure, bearing the colors of a guru. The story starts at 100 mph, crashing Jason in a situation doomed from even before the beginning. Following orders, his guts, clues from friends or simply taking a leap of faith, the protagonist goes from outsource skeptic to a hands down believer. The history is very entertaining, fast paced, easy to read and well written.The book delivers the message home from the beginning. It does not push awkward or improbable situations and every character feels like a real person (well, the ones who have more than a line, at least.) I am not from the outsourcing industry but every one of the seven points make plain sense, so I really took something new, and I believe valuable, with me.This is the book to go for to get the feeling on outsourcing, and none of its downsides impedes profiting from it. That said, there are a few points which would enrich it had it a second edition. Overall, the book feels short, not abbreviated mind you, but too fast a reading. The final testing scene, for instance, would make a whole chapter, easily. "The Goal" set a high standard for critical situations, where you are struck by the pain and sorrow and all that suffering. Outsource(...) does not delve into that deep negative feelings, which is good, somehow, but helps to kind of hamp the final exhilarating relief.Second, the personal drama is a bit light. Don't take me wrong, Jason's personal life does take catastrophic proportions, leading to a hastened fly from the country (yeah, the COUNTRY! Wait till you read that - ROFLing material.) As with other books, the personal side mimics the professional side, but it does not act as an aggravation point, where things go paroxysmal. What could have been set as an stage for Jason's final triumph is laid more or less like some light side of life, a safe harbor where Jason can control how he feels and where to draw the line, no matter what. Again, don't take me wrong: it does have a role in the story. The personal side works as a retreat where Jason reviews all he has learnt and figures how things work, which is a good use of it, adding real value to the teachings (but not that much drama for the story.)"Outsource or Else" overall states that enough knowledge and expertise can save the day. Although the book feels veritable, all the usual corporate cuthroating and the regular bad/evil types are left out. This is not a problem with the book, but rather a point to remember us that lots of things must be taken care before some other things are able to effect the magic. What would be nice is to have that remark around the story somehow, in order to drive this point home and make it less subtle. Maybe a line where Jason ponders "fortunately Michel is a hard sell to dubious proposals, otherwise we'd ending wasting money pointlessly" or "thanks god the agile wars are over and people are up to speed with Scrum".All in all, a must read: intelligent, insightful and funny. (Man, Delaney is a figure! :-) )

“Outsource of Else” is a business novel in the vein of Goldratt’s “The Goal”, Kim’s “The Phoenix Project” or “Adventures of an IT Manager” by Austin that takes the lessons of the trade and wraps it into an interesting story line to capture and maintain the reader’s attention. The key message is that outsourcing can be a powerful solution not only for cost savings but more critically for expert professionals steeped in an environment of execution and focused expertise. The challenge to do your homework and look for a partner who you can build a solid business relationship with rather than just a set of bodies with some level of skill is the key. As someone who has been involved in outsourcing and been burned by the attrition of the support teams as skilled resources leave to be replaced by a warm body and other cultural and time zone impacts this truly is a great read on how to do outsourcing right. Great read I would recommend all IT and other business leaders to read as a must read.

This is a collection of the stories that form Jean "Moebius" Giraud's Edena (or Aedena) epic - really the adventures of interstellar mechanic Stel, as it kicks off with "Repairs," a psy-fi short unconnected to "Upon a Star," the one-off commission for Citroen that wound up becoming the beginning of the epic. Some time after the private publication of Upon a Star, Giraud decided to develop it into a kind of extended parable inspired by the ideas of his guru, Jean-Paul Appel-Guéry. Despite a New Age/Back To Eden orientation the stories have moments of the kind of off-the-wall and satirical situations for which Giraud was famous.I got the hardbound, which has an integral cover (i.e no dust cover): all the art is beautifully reproduced and there are a couple "extras" - short comments by Giraud that introduce the work and preface each chapter (note that these are mostly different comments from those he provided for previous publications.) A one-page biography of Giraud and a select bibliography end the volume.Stel is a pilot and mechanic from an advanced civilization who is supposed to be travelling to a "Jalopy" show on a distant planet with his partner Atan. Affected by a mysterious force, Stel discovers that apparently he alone can activate an ancient technology that transports him, together with Atan, to the legendary planet Edena, a supernatural paradise. Disconnected from their artificial life support systems, the pair develop into man and woman, whose natural physiology and impulses dismay Atan, the female. There is a more mystic aspect to the situation, however, as in a significant dream Stel meets the mysterious psychopomp Master Burg and is attacked by an evil entity. Atan flees from Stel and the separated pair experience symbolic adventures in which they must deal with the artificial civilization that the evil entity has created. Submerged in a dream state by the entity, Stel struggles to be united with Atan, but can he succeed in reality?I like this series a little better than the "Incal" series Giraud did with Alexandro Jodorowsky; the latter is pretty heavy-handed at times and the New-Age stuff seems trite. Nevertheless the Edena stories are solidly in the same general mold - nature is good, society is corrupt, citizens are sheep, etc. The dark ironies of Arzach and surreality of The Airtight Garage aren't much in evidence, but there is some pointed social satire. The artwork is great, Giraud at the height of his powers.

I was introduced to Moebius way back in 1987 when Marvel/Epic released a nine volume series that included “Once Upon a Star”, “The Airtight Garage”, “The Long Tomorrow” and more. I only got four of the books and until now thought that the series was only six volumes long. It appears that everything in this book was already released in that collection but the only story I already owned was “Once Upon a Star” from volume 1. If you already own the entire Marvel/Epic collection I’m not entirely sure it’s worth buying again. On the plus side the colors are noticeably more vibrant and it’s nice to have the stories collected in an attractive hardbound book rather than the paperback Marvel/Epic series. The story has been relettered and retranslated but when I compared the text for a few pages the differences were so minute as to be irrelevant.The Marvel/Epic collection is more comprehensive than this book which apparently only uses material from volumes one, five, seven, eight and nine and not even 100% of that. “Once Upon a Star” is followed by “The Aedena Cycle” (I assume at some point Moebius changed the name from Aedena to Edena) in the Marvel/Epic book but it’s not included here. If you actually want to get the stories from the Marvel/Epic collection be prepared to pay a lot because based on Ebay sales each volume is going to cost you more than the Amazon price of “The World of Edena”.“The World of Edena” is a science fiction/fantasy story of two friends, Stel and Atan, who, in the midst of exploring space, come across a seemingly barren world, devoid of life except for a single pyramid surrounded by a very large encampment of alien lifeforms. I won’t spoil the story but they eventually end up on Edena which is a thinly veiled name alteration of Eden. I had never read the portion where they arrived on Edena and was pleased to find out that the ambiguously gendered Atan was actually a woman. It’s here that Moebius begins to express his beliefs in instinctotherapy which involved eating “raw foods”. Stel and Atan have been so conditioned by technology including bio-implants and molecularly synthesized food that eating raw foods and missing daily doses of “hormonodes” creates a jarring effect. For one thing Atan begins to become much more feminine and Stel notices but as one might expect this return to nature allows them to be truer versions of themselves.I was drawn to Jean Giraud’s art and writing due to it’s simple, dreamlike quality, It reminds me of the style of fellow Frenchmen Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince although a little less surreal. I’m a sucker for back to nature stories and this is now one of my favorites. It has a little bit of the Robinson Crusoe feel. When last I left the story Stel, Atan and countless aliens were being whisked away by the pyramid and now 29 years later I get the rest of the story and I couldn’t have asked for a better continuation. Great collection from a great artist who sadly passed away at the much too young age of 73. Not sure if this would classify as an indictment of instinctotherapy.

Moebius has done a remarkable job of world-building in these 350-ish pages. Worlds-building, actually - worlds within worlds, spirit worlds, and underworlds. And like our own world, it's not the worlds' job to explain themselves, no matter how outrageous they might be. In fact, the last few pages question experienced reality itself.So, if you look for clear motivations, plausibility, and consistency, you might have stopped at the wrong door. But, if you're willing to let this epic sweep you up and follow where it leads, you have an adventure ahead. And, for what it's worth, you might compare this to work by Druillet, another comic artist active at similar times. If you like Giraud's generally soft palette, gentle linework, and willingness to let the story build on its own, you might find a polar opposite in Druillet - opposite in every way except brilliance.-- wiredweird

Under the assumption that you're a Moebius enthusiast, I'd just like to comment briefly on Dark Horse's treatment of releasing this piece stateside. Thankfully they've treated the work with the appropriate reverence and attention to color and detail that such an edition would ideally have. It's a beautiful object and a positive reminder that the digital age of Kindle books will never obsolete such an item.I think a collective sigh of relief can be had that the artist's catalogue is in good hands for future "Moebius Library" releases---which apparently there will be more in '17 and '18!!Keep up the good work Dark Horse and I'll gladly buy each new release.
